A Different Kind of Paul Begg Book

Co-author John Bennett's hand can be seen all over this book. And that's not a bad thing! If you own Begg's earlier solo efforts, such as JtR: The Facts, you'll notice that alternate names for some of the people are used in this book. I can only suppose that's Bennett's touch. He appears to have stuck rather rigorously to the police files for this and other information. I feel that the involvement of Bennett is the primary difference between The Complete and Essential and The Facts. If you don't already own Bennett's solo effort Jack the Ripper: The Making of a Myth, you'll get a taste of it in a few chapters of this book. In short, if you're relatively new to 'Ripperology' and looking for a book that will give a fair-handed overview of the case and suspects, I would strongly recommend this book over older books that have piled up more reviews but are...well...older. Even though the Ripper case is now 126 years old, new discoveries and ideas are coming out constantly, and those older books simply won't give you an idea of the current state of the field as well as this book will. Having said that, I recommend that after you purchase this book, you should also get a hard copy of Begg & Bennett's CSI: Whitechapel. I suggest the hard copy because the illustrations are fantastic and a big selling point of the book. Also check out Paul Begg's The Facts and the absolutely essential journal of the field, Ripperologist magazine, which Paul Begg is heavily involved with. I hope this review helps.
