The previous version was from 1991 so I was recommended to buy the 2015 version. Since the previous version and this current version are over 20 years apart, the newer version has a lot more newer stuff in it (especially with the advent of computers with faster processors, GUI's, etc...yay Moore's Law). This is an amazing and well written textbook on the complex subject that is groundwater modeling. For anyone curious about groundwater modeling or getting in depth into it, I highly recommend this book. I got it for my groundwater modeling class for grad school.

I am only giving it 4/5 stars because after a month several of the pages started falling out...despite the fact the textbook was bought brand new. I think there is something wrong with the binding. Whenever I open the book I hear small little cracking noises coming from the binding. Several of my class-mates who got the same book started noticing several of their pages were falling out too. If the publishers or authors of this book are reading this review, please fix this problem! Your book content is amazing but the book's structural integrity is failing!

I kinda was hoping there was an updated version to the 1st edition after 1992. This is the best groundwater modeling book that could ever exist in history. The book worth thousand of dollars and Im so happy to have it finally.

An Apologia for Non-Intervention

Alan Kuperman purports to stick to "the facts." But the fact is that he ignores them:
He assumes that the only effective intervention in Rwanda would have been an airlift of U.S. troops from the continental United States, and then calculates that intervention would have taken too much time to be effective. In fact, 2500 UNAMIR peacekeeping troops were already on the ground in Rwanda, with over 5,000 French, Belgian, and U.S. troops in neighboring countries, and the French and Belgians had their troops in Rwanda within a week of the beginning of the genocide, but only to extract their own citizens. As Linda Melvern proves in her much better book, A People Betrayed, what was needed was the revised U.N. Security Council mandate for UNAMIR and the reinforcements the courageous UNAMIR commander, Gen. Romeo Dallaire requested.
Mr. Kuperman also assumes as fact that President Clinton did not know about the genocide until weeks after it began. In fact, despite efforts by lawyers in the State Department to avoid calling it genocide, U.S. diplomats in Rwanda called it genocide the day after the killing began, and Pres. Clinton knew it within the first week.
The failure of the U.N., U.S., France, and others who could have intervened to prevent and then stop this preventable genocide was a failure of political will and moral empathy. Mr. Kuperman's attempt to excuse it as militarily and logistically impossible to stop may let the policy makers responsible for this colossal failure sleep more peacefully. But for the murdered people of Rwanda, his excuses provide little solace.

Excellent read for the lay person

Ever wondered how to decide whether to intervene in a genocide?
This book lays out the obstacles that would have had to have been overcome to avert the wholesale slaughter in Rwanda, a genocide that was largely completed in a matter of weeks.
As a lay person and concerned citizen about U.S. intervention policies in other countries, I am relieved to find a book that analyzed the issues in an clear, unbiased fashion.
Kuperman briefly but cogently outlines various considerations including geography, culture, and history in a practical, behind-the-scenes manner that makes a complicated situation better understood, even for those outside government and policy think tanks.
Highly recommended for any reader interested in humanitarian aid.

I bought this cookbook for my wife. She always was cooking healthy but often the meals would not have flavor. This book cooks with great ingredients which makes the meals taste really good while if you follow the portion sizes, you will lose weight. I've cooked about 80 percent of my meals from this book and have lost 30 pounds in 1 year! I love eating good food while eating health and losing weight!

At the time I bought this, I'd heard nothing about it. I had simply rarely seen a cookbook with so many glowing reviews, especially for one with "skinny" in the title. I have reviewed scores of cookbooks on Amazon and have bookshelves full, like some do a reading library. But I must say, this is one of the most well-done I have personally ever seen myself. I can understand, now, the cult following it's received.

First, let's touch on how "now" this cookbook is...by that I mean it has stepped out of old school cookbooks and how they have always been done, and considered today's audience and what they might need. So many of us are on special diets or have to entertain for a family member or guest who is and pull something together--whether that be gluten-free, vegetarian, something for a family who works during the day and needs crockpot meals, something for a family who works all the time and only wants to cook on weekends and then freeze the meals... this book took that all into account. Beside each recipe there is a color and letter coding-V for vegetarian, GF for gluten free, freezer friendly, crockpot etc. And, for those of us who count calories and want to know nutrients or carbs, it also has all that too! That took some time, but boy is it handy, even if you yourself only use it occassionally.

The photos are plentiful and throughout and professionally done with good lighting that makes you want to eat it. I have had a few cookbooks that actually made me turned off to the meal due to the grey lighting or even ones I knew were fake like a slow cooker photo of mac and cheese that showed it browned on top (that does not occur in a slow cooker). Not so for this one, it's how the recipe turns out and they make you want to lick the page!

But no cookbook is complete without good recipes and this one sets the bar. You could honestly set down any of these dishes in front of a family of boys who who never diet in their lives and they will want seconds and thirds--the taste is fantastic! These are truly restaurant quality meals, that are obviously tested and tried and perfected. I have seen many recipes for fish tacos, for example, but the ingredients here are totally different and more full of flavor. It's also easy to substitute things for even stricter diets.

I LOVE that when the author finds brands that work best in a recipe, she also lists those. It feels like you are reading someone's personal cookbook that has cooked the recipe many times but found what brands stand out (for example King Author flour when using wheat flour. I agree.) Not in a commercial way or trying to sell it, but just to say which ones she personally uses. Some authors will not do this unless the company pays them to use their name in the book. This is clearly not the case and also clearly only done when it makes a difference in taste.

There are great make ahead recipes and these feel original. I rarely ever eat out, preferring to cook all meals at home so I feel like over the years I have seen the same old tired recipes made the same old tired ways on the internet. These have new ways and methods and often they are with not only dieting in mind but they have a clear angle of a focus on health as well and satiety. The pages have facts for back up, like a recipe for PB & J overnight oats in a jar (make ahead the night before for a busy morning where you still need a good breakfast.) notes how filling and healthy oats are and why. (Which is true.)

These are FANTASTIC recipes, not just the same ones redone with diet ingredients, but original and loaded with flavor. Nothing comes out bad, nothing comes out off, these are good enough to serve at dinner parties and more importantly--to make you feel like you are not dieting.

You get the idea. That is a very small sampling. At nearly 350 pages, you get loads of recipes and loads of photos. Whether you never eat red meat, eat only white meat, eat only seafood, eat no animal protein...or switch it up all the time, you can easily find a chapter on whatever suits your fancy or your mood that day.

The dishes are GREAT, not just recipes but really things you savor.

This one is done right, not just recipes grabbed to fill a cookbook but original ways of making skinny dishes taste better. It's a gem.

I was so pleased that it was so big

I have followed the Skinnytaste blog since 2010. I don't buy cookbooks anymore as I keep an iPad in the kitchen but I definitely wanted this one on my shelf! I was so pleased that it was so big, packed with recipes AND beautiful pictures.

My husband and I have both lost 30 lbs over the past year and Skinnytaste recipes were a huge part of this accomplishment. Gina's Chicken Enchiladas, Crock Pot Santa Fe Chicken and Crock Pot Chicken Taco Chili are weekly staples in our house. My 2 year old gobbles them all down. My husband adores the enchiladas. There is a fair amount of prep in many of her recipes as others have pointed out (with the exception of the crock pot recipes of course) but pace yourself..it's totally worth it. The recipes have flavor, I promise! I put my toddler down for a nap one day last week and made 6 batches of enchilada sauce and tossed them in the freezer. We had some left over shredded chicken (crock pot style) and we tried her Buffalo Chicken melts (toddler didn't like but I didn't expect her to!) and I made Noodle-less Zucchini Lasagna yesterday (toddler had 2 helpings). After trying over 40 of Gina's recipes I've learned what to keep stocked in the pantry (SWANSON chicken broth, some special hot sauces, chili peppers in adobo sauce, cheeses, kosher salt) and I pick up lean meat and fresh veggies weekly. So nice to see my favorite recipes in the book and many new ones as well.

I sip the Skinnytaste Kool-Aid as you can tell...Great job Gina!

Steve Bowkett has taught and practiced architecture for over 25 years in numerous universities and art colleges and is currently a Senior Lecturer at London South Bank University. He studied at the Royal College of Art in London and the Polytechnic of Central London.

Great Book for Budding Architects

I bought this book for my 9 year old son who wants to be an architect.
He LOVES the book. The activities range from simple to complex, so he can pick and choose based on his mood. We've done a few of them together, which is great for us because it gives us something to bond over--mom's don't usually have that much in common with 9 year old boys, but everyone loves to draw skyscrapers. It occupies him for at least 30 minutes, sometimes hours, which means less time in front of the TV, computer, or video games.

Fun book to create with

I like the Archidoodle: The Architect's Activity Book. It gets the juices flowing for creating unusual and interesting buildings you otherwise never would have designed. It isn't a textbook or anything on a technical training level but it is a fun book to just create away in. For example, you are instructed to design a house by a cliff and one by a waterfall all the way to design and draw a sectional view of a house that has been influenced by a machine. Some ideas are fascinating like design a funky-looking chimney or design some ideas for domesticated animals, (other than a dog), with one idea showing a cat basket that hangs off a radiator.
Some thought-provoking ones too like using a mountain slope, design in section the arrangement of a small thermal bath house and you are asked to consider views, light and privacy. So it can go from designing something simple to the very complex. I recommend this book to any novice architect, but I also recommend this to any pro out there too, because this book will get you to open up your skills and design things you might have never designed otherwise. There are plenty of buildings, cities and houses to design as well.

One bobble is that most scenes are set so one is a little limited by set scenes to draw a building or a city, but that too is a challenge I kind of like since it makes you think about how to overcome a set scene and yet still design a great house, building or city. Just keep in mind this is a fun book to just create in. I love this book and I think you will too.

Fun for a young teen

This was a gift for my son who likes to draw. He has shown an interest in learning to draw buildings and is thinking of architectural drafting or rendering when he gets older. I though this would be a great book for him to get started on some basics and give him so activities to try on his own. He LOVES it! Lots of great examples of different parts of a building he can use to give a drawing more texture. He's 14 and this is at just the right level for him.

Excellent broad based intro text

This text is very clearly written, and an absolute must as a reference for the fundamentals of ceramics. The text ties basic priciples of physics to the structure and behavior of ceramics. The text is ideal for late undergrad, early graduate studies - and is also perfect for scientists and engineers without a background in Materials Engineering *because* it draws on basic physics to clearly cover the topic. Especially useful are the numerous examples within the chapters to highlight important ideas, and the last six chapters - which give important infrmation on electrical, optical, and mechanical properties of ceramics.

No Books in the Field Compare

Dr. Barsoum has covered all the bases in this well thought out and beautifully organized book! The author makes the field of ceramics interesting even to people new to the field. This book was used in a course I took, and I will not sell it because it is such an authoritative reference source. There are no other books that compare to Fundamentals of Ceramics.
