Their ultimate case is the Puppeteer, a deadly cyberterrorist who turns out to be a ghostless, "self-aware" artificial intelligence spontaneously created out of the vast sea of networked information. Masamune's b&w drawings are dynamic and beautifully gestural; he vividly renders the awesome urban landscape of a futuristic, supertechnological Japan. Great artwork, good stories

The artwork is great and many of the stories I have seen in the films. Usually at the beginning of the story there are a few pages in color, but the rest is in black and white. The stories are interesting and I have had trouble putting it down. There are explanations on the pages as to what is what sometimes, plus there is a great amount of info in the back pages. Some of the words are too small for me to read and I have had to use a magnifying glass. Sometimes I get a bit confused as I am not sure in which order I should read some of the frames. It has been a long time since I read a Comic Book(graphic novel/manga) that I am thoroughly enjoying reading this one, especially since Ghost in The Shell is one of my Favorite Series/films. I thought the price was bit high, but at 350 pages it is a good value.

Ghost in the Shell depicts a world very likely to come true. A world where the line between man and machine has become blurry and machines become human while men can be programed. A world of robots, cyborgs, super tech, violence and the same greed, ambition and folly of always. The story is entertaining, complex and dark. Sometimes it can be lighthearted but it is mainly dark. Because when you trade your flesh for power, what is left of YOU?

A very accessible look at transit history, especially NYC, through the eyes of one of the world's top transportation engineers.

A very accessible, easily-readable account of the past, present, and future of transit throughout the US and the rest of the world. I especially enjoyed the anecdotes surrounding New York City, an area which Schwartz, also known as "Gridlock Sam," has much personal experience as Traffic Commissioner.

The first half of the book is historical: expect to learn about the great engineering marvel and transportation failure of Robert Moses' Cross-Bronx Expressway, the political and economic reasons (as opposed to the oft-cited social reasons) behind the 50s white flight phenomenon, and other fascinating stories concerning the past 100 years of transit development. Schwartz's magic in this section is the "behind the scenes" perspective, prompting the casual reader (such as myself) to think about the issues like a transportation engineer rather than like a consumer.

The second half of the book concerns the future, and does so by describing unique aspects of transit systems and traffic planning in other cities throughout the country, peppered with anecdotes from Schwartz's work as a consultant. Although I found this portion a little weaker than the NYC historical review (though I admit I am a biased reader who purchased the book out of interest in NYC's infrastructure), it was interesting to learn about the transit systems in other cities. The section about self-driving cars was especially insightful, for the same reasons as the historical portion -- it approached the topic from the perspective of a transportation engineer rather than the perspective of a technologist or consumer.

The reasons I didn't rate the book 5 stars were: I found the section on Millenials and the benefits of walking a little bit unnecessarily long, although I understand why Schwartz would include it assuming an older target audience. I also would have appreciated more details, both historical and technical, in some sections, even if those details risk boring or alienating a more casual reader.

If you're looking for a very easy to read introduction to the broad world of transportation and its political, social, and economic state within the country (or specifically NYC), then I highly recommend this book. If you're looking for a detailed introduction to transportation engineering, this might not be the right place to begin, although it might serve as motivational material to dig deeper.

An encouraging book for smart citizens

During our research on traffic and the effects for cities I came across Samuel Schwartzes book Street Smart: The Rise of Cities and the Fall of Cars. I was hesitant at first to purchase the book as I felt it really exceeded my needs – 292 pages - on smart streets only?

The title turned out to be a bit deceptive, as this book is about so much more than street design: It is an explanation of American Culture, and its obsession with roads and cars, and beyond this a deep dive into the movement created by the millennials who - for the first generation of Americans - seem willing to drive less and to share more resources.

Schwartz, one of the leading transportation experts in the US and a constant proponent for intelligent transportation systems, is thrilled by the combination of a change in citizens’ mentality and the smart use of data. In probably the most eye- opening chapter “What makes a smart city?”, Schwartz dives deep into what the potential for cities are. With examples ranging from the obvious European ‘stars smart cities’ like Copenhagen, Zurich and Amsterdam, Schwartz makes us understand, that functioning cities, which do not condemn its resident to sitting behind a steering wheel for hours at a time, are also real possible in the US:
• L.A. has become the most promising mega city to build a smart public transportation system
• Salt Lake City, with its’ Envision Utah initiative has bet on walking and transit solutions back in 1997 and is now being seen as the best large public transportation system in the US
• New initiatives in many smaller US cities like Boston, Austin and San Francisco show the potential for a

Mobility apps ranging from CityMapper, TransitAPP to Google Maps are connecting the dots for cities and citizens alike. And Schwartz puts emphasis on the seemingly unlimited opportunities brought by technologies to make living in urban areas more attractive and healthier.

Reading the book, I came to admire Samuel Schwartz’s amazing - probably excruciating difficult - efforts over the past 40 + years to change the way Americans (and New York mayors) think about transportation as centered solely around the car and its every growing need for more and bigger streets. He made me lough when he talks about his ‘many acts of municipal sabotage’ erasing an existing road that cut through a New York park from a map. And I was astonished to learn that he had the first bike lanes of New York build in the early '80s (on 5th Avenue) and that Mayor Ed Koch ultimately ordered that they be taken away.

The book left me encouraged to continue to help find solutions to eliminate traffic. Even in a city like New York, arguably the most walkable U.S. city with an amazing public transportation system, the unbelievable number of 300,000 school children is being driven to school there are small ways every citizen can help to make a difference.

A terriffic horror story that appeals to a wide audience!

Are you a history buff? Do you like short stories? Do foreign cultures interest you? Like H.P. Lovecraft? Like horror stories?

If you answered 'yes' to any of the above, this work is for you! I cannot stress that enough! Prepare to be swept away by the well crafted and in depth depiction of the Sublime State and all it's glory as you jump into Matthew Quinn's 'Beast of the Bosporus'!!

I loved this story. As a longtime fan of the Cthullu mythos and someone who has a large interest in the Medieval period and Ottoman Empire as a whole I found this story to be amazingly detailed and fabulously constructed. It's quite clear the author has put a great ammount of research into this piece and even the little details about culture and sayings are well expanded upon. You can really feel the world of the story come alive and immerse you in this historical period!

The story itself is set in the Cthullu mythos and is an excellent contributor to the mythos. The series of course resurrects an old favorite and brings a new sense of horror and a felling of 'My God what have I done!?" when the ending rolls around! You can feel the tension building as the story progresses and how the politics of the time end up shaping the potentially cosmic consequences of what transpires.

It's a short, scary, and spectacular read! I don't want to say to much to avoid spoilers, but I highly reccoment this short story to fans of the genre!

Lovecraft in the Ottoman Empire

HP Lovecraft was fond of writing stories about men who came face to face with creatures mankind was never meant to comprehend, or gained knowledge that mankind was never meant to know. The Beast of the Bosporus is a tale very much in Lovecraft's tradition, when a desperate Grand Vizer of the Ottoman Empire attempts to summon one of the Great Old Ones.

Mathew Quinn does an excellent job of recreating the world of the Ottoman Empire, a rare stomping ground for alternate history. The key characters are all well-drawn, blending the devout with knowledge that cannot be regarded as anything other than profane. I won't give away the ending, but this is a story that practically demands expansion or a sequel. And it might just give you nightmares...

Ottomans and Outer Gods, oh my!

In the aftermath of the Battle of Lepanto, where the combined naval might of the West not only won a stunning victory against the Ottoman Navy, but has shaken Grand Vizier Sokollu Mehmed Pasha, whose faith in the infallibility of the Empire vanished beneath the wave's with the Sultan's fleet. Pasha, unlike many in Constantinople, sees the West advancing rapidly, and its might growing, whilst the Ottoman Empire stagnates and shrinks, and he sees the day where the West shall bring the fight to his owns shores and the idea scares him. In hopes of giving the Ottomans a weapon able to both defend the Empire and bring the West to heel, chases after dark rumors of a powerful creature of unfathomable power and might, who creates fear, madness and turmoil in those who meet his alien gaze, who rests beneath the waves, ruling a corpse-city, and Pasha believes if properly summoned, he might be made to defend his own city... of course, the will of the Outer Gods and that of man, even a Grand Vizier, rarely match.

That's right folks, Quinn has penned a Lovecraftian tale of cosmic horror, set against the backdrop of the Ottoman Empire of the 16th century, and it is a delight for fans of alternate history and the Cthulhu Mythos alike. Quinn manages to both tap into that sense of Lovecraftian horror and style so well it almost seems like old Howard Phillips penned it himself - the descriptions of the flesh-bound book of the Necronomicon, or the induced madness, or the writing tentacles masses of the famed Outer God, all makes it seem like a short story torn straight from a lost chapter of the Mythos. Top it off with a great setting amidst the hubbub of Ottoman Constantinople, both vivid and historically accurate, and the world of the story is made all the better. Top it off with some great characterization, some tense moments and a very descriptive battle between a lesser Abomination and a few ships of the Ottoman fleet in the Golden Horn and Quinn has given us another splendid story well worth the meager $0.99 price tag.

I highly recommend it for young children

This book is very sensitive to the feelings and needs of young siblings of those who have type 1 diabetes. The child without diabetes may feel ignored while so much attention is given to treat diabetes. There isn't much help available for the child without diabetes. This book fills a real need. I highly recommend it for young children.

A good mix of clinical cases with explanations, but full of typographical errors and weak questions

This textbook on neurology in the Case Files series contains fifty-four well selected cases comprising common conditions diagnosed and treated by neurologists. Topics discussed include seizure, stroke, dementia, head trauma, demyelinating disease, infectious disease, and the approach to headache, among others. The explanations of the cases (including diagnosis, pathophysiology, and treatment) are generally well written and of appropriate quality.

Unfortunately, the multiple choice questions included for each case are of exceptionally low quality. They do not at all mimic the types of questions found on the USMLE Step2 or on the NBME Shelf Exam. For example, many questions simply give the reader a list of four statements and ask him or her to select the correct statement (one would never be asked to do this on a real exam).

The book is also absolutely riddled with typographical errors. This is surprising given that this is the second edition of the textbook. It also contains many outright factual errors. For example, on page 174, in the "clinical pearls" box, it states that Alzheimer's Disease is an "anterior cortical dementia", despite the fact that a mere six pages earlier, on page 168, it stated that Alzheimer's was the "prototype for posterior cortical dementia". Elsewhere in the book the authors make similarly contradictory statements, in one case recommending a CT scan with contrast as the initial study to rule out hemorrhagic stroke, despite having recommended a CT scan without contrast on the previous page.

Overall this is a useful book to prepare for the shelf exam and contains a well selected group of cases, including some diseases that aren't covered in the USMLE World Step2 question bank. However, the book is limited by its atrocious copy editing, factual errors, and weak questions. Readers should supplement this text with USMLE World or PreTest Neurology if they want a high score on the shelf exam.

I love case files series in general and use them for all my m3 clerkships, but man is this one bad. Just rife with spelling, vocab, and factual errors. Hard to trust anything it says. Hard to believe its a second edition. Do not recommend case files for neuro.

Very hard to read - even simple topics are written in a difficult language.

Good collection of case, well organized in a syndromatic groups,

BUT

absolutely hard to read, especially comparing with another book from the Case Files series.
Some cases and explanations are so long and repeat consideration postulates...
Really hard to use for exam preparation - a lot of irrelevan information even for easy and obvious topics.
This should not be a study book - this is a review book, if one need all this water and additional miriads of facts he should read Merk or Harrison.
