Highly recommended. Am using it for self study, and I feel like i have accomplished something even though I'm only 6 chapters in. The pace is good - it assumes learners are motivated, and very quickly progresses to language and grammar you can use every day. Each chapter has quite a number of new characters to learn. These aren't necessarily the easiest characters to memorize and write - but they were useful. Better than sticking to 'easy' characters, which don't get used often. I would recommend buying the workbook together. I found it very helpful in practising the characters, and learning to recognise them faster. I have tried other self-study books, but this is one of the best so far.

I've made my way through the first 3 volumes of this series. It is a perfect entry point to the world of Mandarin language. It has been wonderful to speak and read some of the language on my trips to China. Highly recommended!

Good but...

I am so happy to have gotten the book on time but while in class using the book my teacher pointed out that the book was defective... meaning there are some chapters that are missing information and i need it to follow the class. I do not want to return the book as it may take a while to get a new one and i need it for class. Other than that issue i do like the book but i am not sure i can purchase the other books because if they are also defective i will have more isssues. Please check the books before sending them out.

Better than school. Reuben Advani, please write more books!

As an MIT student, I find Reuben's book more enlightening than most of my professors.

I'm not even halfway through my Kindle version of this book, and I'm picking up my Macbook Air to pen this review. This book deserves more stars!! Every undergrad or MBA student, professional, anyone seeking an insider's guide to modern finance must buy this book. It'll even help decipher newspaper jargon of off-balance sheet transactions, special purpose entity (SPEs). It even highlights what ratios / which financial statements / how major corporations today cook the books.

I wish my professors would use anecdotes like Reuben's, because a reader will actually *remember* them unlike most other books. Example:

"I like to think of the income statement as the report card for the company... However, in the world of finance, it's the student and not the teacher issuing the grade... Companies an highlight certain items with the hopes that Wall Street and the investor public will look favorably upon the company based on this emphasis. Simply stated, the problems include the following:
- Revenues do not accurately reflect what the company has collected.
- Expenses do not accurately reflect the cash that was paid. ...
The income statement is not entirely useless. It does have its purpose in that it reports the overall performance of the company, though often this performance may not be actualized."

Whether you have a background in Finance or not you will benefit from the way Reuben presents relatively complex financial analysis concepts in an easy to follow manner. Most Finance textbooks are a snore-fest filled with theory that will put insomniacs to sleep. Reuben has taken those theories and presented them in such a way that is jovial and lighthearted. The structure of this book is genius; examples are utilized in a manner that is actually applicable to the "real world". Novel idea!

All MBA students should be required to read this book prior to showing up for day 1 of class.

Profound, Eloquent, and Extremely Accessible

It is seldom that most readers come across a spirituality book that varies from topics such as Astral Projection to environmentalism that is so well-thought-out and written while actually providing concrete answers. The book is a fascinating read and provides insight into a range of topics both spiritual and practical. Initially, I was most interested in the subject matter relating to astral projection and reincarnation, but quickly realized the great wisdom throughout the entire book revolving around the overarching theme of love, tolerance, and personal betterment. I'd like to think that I have improved myself as a person by doing the mental exercises to become a more mindful and tolerant individual. Even if your personal beliefs don't align with that of this book, it still is an essential piece of reading to understand the universe and life around us in a way that can be personally interpreted to make sense of one's ideology. Megan Elliot is a very promising young author and I look forward to reading her future books.

Both my husband and I were curious about this book. It came recommended by a spiritual friend of ours as a great little book packed with huge ideas. I was skeptical as I rely on the Bible's teachings to verify or discount my own thoughts and feelings about spiritual things.

My guess is this book is written by someone who is more familiar with Buddhissm and general spiritual teachings than Christianity and so there is less Biblical language and this may lose some Christians when reading what is written here. I hope not though.

As a Christian, I sometimes have a hard time setting aside superstition and fear to look more closely at other spiritual teachings.

In this book though, I see the love of Jesus' teachings in Albert's words...and wonder sometimes too - if he isn't the Holy Spirit calling himself by another name...but this is the "lens" I look through...

Some things I love from this book: "When love becomes the number one goal in your life, the universe will respond to you...."

"What you need to do above all else is know yourself. Once you have done that, you must love yourself...once you know others, you must love them..."

In the chapter titled Astral Protection (Chapter 5), Albert states:

"...you have learned enough from cultural ideas and religious beliefs to get an idea of what (evil) is and how it is created...most of you misunderstand how to go about nullifying evil. You believe that it is something to be fought against...literally...this is precisely the wrong way to go about it...seek to understand why the negativity is there an try to heal it in a way that is safe for everyone."

Amen Albert.

And there here are so many more wonderful spiritual truths stated though out this book-which is packed with such a diverse expanse of information that is only touched upon. One such is: "Try to be at peace and take your life as it comes. Don't take direction from anything other than your own heart."

There are many parts of this book that perhaps reflect Ms. Elliott's specific interests - an understandable thing since she is the one doing the channeling, she would have asked "Albert" about many things she is specifically interested in. Albert tries to explain some very deep and profound universal truths in and among the various chapters that made all of it worth reading.

Sometimes, Albert's explanations of certain things just blew my mind (in a good way). Particularly in Chapter 9 - Exploring the Infinite

Here Albert launches into the territory the Bible hints at when it tells us that God's ways and his thoughts are far higher than ours (Isaiah 55:8-9). Isaiah states that God's "understanding no one can fathom" (Isaiah 40:28). Paul said, "Oh the depths of the riches of the wisdom and knowledge of God! How unsearchable his judgments and his paths beyond tracing out!" (Romans 11:33). Job said , "Surely I spoke of things I did not understand, things too wonderful for me to know" (Job 42:3; see also Psalm 139:6).

Albert's words are: "God's story is complicated. God thinks, God wonders. God is in the dark too. There is nothing that God doesn't know, and yet It can never know Itself completely."

All in all, there was many things here that are beyond my spiritual path in understanding and many things here that are not in the scope of what interests me specifically, BUT. Many many things that made this a very worthwhile read and will remain in my mind to contemplate and pray about.

Most of all, I love that this Albert only just touched on so many things. I felt that I could just sit down and talk with him for the next several months and still end up wanting to know more.

Excellent book for anyone who is in the trade. I've been thinking about getting this book for some time. Wish I had gotten it sooner. Well worth it. Beautifully printed and bound. If you are a clockmaker or an advanced hobbyist, this should be on your shelf.

Fanatastic book, and a bargain at the price. This book should be of interest to all clock makers, model makers, and home shop machinist. Anyone interested in the history of machine tools and clock making will also find this work of real interest. The first section covers the history of wheel cutting and the later part deals with all aspects of gear making in detail. Covers a wide range of gear cutting equipment, how to make cutters, and related watch and clock making operations. Absolutely the best book on the subject!!

This is book is a waste of time

There is a rarely a case when I wonder why a book got published and this one meets that case. The content and examples are terrible and the order of the book does give any indication of advanced concepts in C#. This book tells me what advanced concepts in C# can do, but doesn't expound on here they are done. Terrible book and written for, well, I don't know who.

OK but no Terrarium

First I think the title is a bit misleading. It is an intermediate level book. There is not enough room to cover anything reaaly advanced.

The text is readable and seems to cover the salient points. There are quite a few inaccuracies, but there are in all books I have read. The author occasionally mentions completely unrelated topics, perhaps in an attempt to impress, but (when he strays into an area with which I am familiar) only manages to show his ignorance.

The code is easy enough to understand but is very rambling with a few oddities. I think the author is trying to vaguely demonstrate other ideas (particuarly desing patterns) about which he is no expert. Instead, he should just concentrate on simple code that demonstrates the topic in question.

That said, the author obviously knows a lot about programming many different areas of .NET. I found I learnt a lot by reading the book, looking at the code and then rewriting it to my standards.

The worst thing about the book is that it comes with no CD, relying on you downloading the code from the Internet. The code from the Osborne web site is easy enough to download, but a couple of the chapters rely on code from Microsoft. I have tried many times to download the "Terrarium" application from [...] to no avail. How hard would (and expensive) it be to put everything you need onto a CD?

Not much to see here

This book is of some value. For instance it contains a discussion of attributes. Information on this topic is still hard to find.

The discussion of many points of object programming can be characterized as original and even informative, but it is also riddled with errors.

For example, Kimmel gets the definition of Generalization and Specialization completely backward with regard to Inheritance. That mistake is forgivable, because you can substitute the words while you are reading and it still makes sense.

But it is not forgivable when he clearly knows nothing about a concept, yet attempts to fake it. The section of Aggregation and Encapsulation contains almost zero information other than his "favorite example of encapsulation is the relationship between the human body and the bladder."

Later he attempts to muddle over his complete lack of understanding of the topic of Polymorphism with a bizzare example regarding sending children to get beer during the superbowl. After this detour into the irrelevant he triumphantly exclaims "That's polymorphism."

No it isn't.

Packs a punch....

I should begin by saying this novel by Jenny Offill is not the kind of fare I would normally read and I only picked it up at the insistent urging of several friends. The average reader might categorize this short (160 pages) novel as very 'literary' or artsy in format, but bear with me for a few moments...

This is the story (in my opinion, at least) of a woman on the verge of a breakdown. We never know her name for she only ever refers to herself as "the wife." The story is presented to us as a series of what might be seen as journal entries, but I came to see them as just plain thoughts. Her thoughts as they popped into her head. So we only see things from her point of view. We learn that she is a college professor, married with one child ("the girl"), lives in New York and is very, very unfulfilled in her life.

Then, a marital crisis.

The book is easily read in one afternoon. As I noted at the start of this review, this format (random thoughts) is not my normal chosen fare in books. Yet I found myself captivated. This was a woman in crisis. She isn't entirely sympathetic (who amongst us is perfect?), but neither is she to blame. Like so many wives and mothers, she is questioning the direction her life took (although she would lay down her life for her child). Because it is written in 'thought format' the book feels, at first, disjointed. But as I kept reading it occurred to me that my own thoughts are often disjointed in the same manner. I was slipping into her head, if that makes sense.

Ultimately, the end of the book provides no answers to these dilemmas we face. But the book itself is so chock-full of snippets of truth that I find I must now go back and re-read the book, this time with a notebook and pen at hand. While I've never considered myself a fan of edgy, artsy (not a real word, I know) literary fiction, this book surprised me. I'm impressed.

Is That All There Is?

A rare find, a book like this. You start reading the book, and find short sentences and paragraphs, but the more you keep reading, It all begins to make sense. Sparse is not the right word, but this is a book of 192 pages, of observations and small spaces in time

What we know a woman is narrating the book, as we read along,we can start to see this woman and the man she meets in our mind's eye. We observe the places and people she talks about. The man and woman meet, no names are ever mentioned, they marry, purchase a home, have a child, and go through their days as a couple with a child. The child takes all the wife's time, she cries a lot, but stops crying when brought to the pharmacy store down the street. The child grows, the marriage grows, upsets in the marriage, as life moves on.

The wife plans a party, the child is excited, the people come, the child mingles for a bit, and then says "party over, go home". This is their life, the woman, the man the child. This is a simple story, no excess, each word has meaning in its placement. I was sad when the book ended, 'Is that all there is?'

Very interesting read. It's different. You won't realize you are getting it and into it...until you get it and are into it! You can look up other reviews if you want to know what it's about. I'll just tell you it's unique, engaging, quick, and readable.

Bottom line: Read it.

Masterpiece for the analysis neophyte

Well, what can I say. I enjoyed this book much more than I normally enjoy mathematics books, and I do have a healthy liking for mathematics.

I believe this is Professor Lewin's life's work, and it shows. Mathematical analysis is not an easy subject, and Lewin has made a genuine effort to make this subject accessible to all students. That is not to say this book is "for idiots/dummies," but for the intelligent mathematical analysis neophyte looking for a book to ease him into higher mathematics. The writing style is informal and straight to the point.

So what can you expect to learn from this book? If you don't know what mathematical analysis is at all, you'll read about that too (as well as the subject matter itself!) The examples and problems are wonderful. They are at just the right level for an engaging introduction that will give you a place to stand to take further courses. You can understand and enjoy this book with a modest mathematical background (high school only, and not necessarily any calculus courses!) and average grades. You will need to go slowly and think, but Lewin masterfully guides you through.

This book is a welcome change from enormous encyclopedic works that present page after page of mind-bending symbols and leave it as an exercise for the reader to figure out what it all means. The authors of these wretched books think a quick paragraph is just fine. I disagree, and so does Lewin. This book is a pleasure to *read*, and you will learn about mathematical analysis, too! This book can serve as a good introduction to higher mathematics as well as calculus. Lewin provides early instruction in the "vocabulary of mathematics" and proofs before getting into the subject matter of the book.

Lewin makes mathematical analysis accessible for everyone, even those with a modest mathematical background, and even makes it a pleasure.

Many examples with a bit too much talk

This is actually an excellent text as a supplement for students of advanced calculus. There are many simplified examples and a lot of explaination, perhaps too much. The author starts with logic, which is good since most students have difficulty with understanding the contrapositive, converse, and proof by contradiction. He gives a lot of information on the subjects that are covered (there are a good number of subjects not covered) and talks (perhaps rambles) a lot on these subjects. However if you could dig through the jargon and appreciate a bunch of nice examples and fundamentals this is a book for you. I didn't look at the CD.
