About the Author
Moshe Feldenkrais (1904–1984) was a distinguished scientist, physicist, and engineer. After suffering a crippling injury, he began an intense study of the relationship between bodily movement and healing that culminated in the Feldenkrais Method�.

Judo master Gunji Koizumi was�the founder of the Budokai and a pioneer of judo in Europe.�

Michel Brousse,a seventh-degree black belt, teaches the cultural history of sport�and the didactics of judo at Bordeaux University in France. He is the author of numerous�books and articles on these subjects. A former member of the French national judo�team, he currently serves as Research Director of the International Judo Federation.�

Dennis Leri is one of Moshe Feldenkrais’s original American students, with more than�thirty years of experience teaching the Feldenkrais Method��and training new practitioners.�His martial arts practice includes boxing, aikido, Chen-style T’ai Chi, and Lan Shou Kung Fu.�

Moti Nativ�is a Feldenkrais Method��practitioner and martial artist. He leads the�Bujinkan Shiki (Awareness) Dojo with branches throughout Israel and holds seminars�in Israel, the U.S., Europe, and Japan.

A masterpiece.

Definitely my favorite judo book on groundwork. Some early chapters discuss theory & philosophy, much like a Gleeson judo book would. The bulk of the book is a very good & well-systematized discussion of groundwork tactics and principles. The tactical/situational presentation differs from many other judo books, which tend to present "catalogs" of techniques, maybe with 2-step (2-technique) combinations. Feldenkrais shows (showed) longer chains of techniques, more along the lines of what I've seen in some books on Brazilian Ju-Jitsu.

With the (very good) line drawings, he discusses tactics & principles in a way that suggests how the student can expand beyond the confines of what's within the book.

Doesn't have the beautiful photos like Kashiwazaki's "Fighting Judo" does, but this is a better organized/systematized book for students of groundwork than "F.J.," or the Masterclass books that address newaza. (Keep in mind that this book includes techs. that are now illegal in judo, so the M'class books, especially "Armlocks," have the advantage of relevance to modern competition.)

Low impact judo, great exercise for all the body

All the techniques I learnt over 25 years in judo and ju-jitsu, and more. Analysing even the simple techniques like this improves all techniques and spatial awareness. Co-ordination is improved enormously for young and old alike. With this groundwork even the unfit can change their lives, improve co-ordination, spinal movement, awareness of what we can actually do with every part of the body. It means a better future and more longevity for me, I am in no doubt about that. Every muscle in the body can be re-enlivened with groundwork training to improve walking, posture and well being.

Most of the content is well-known, but what is not is essential

For people who have researched the Israeli-Palestinian conflict, most of the content of this book is well known as it describes the current situation and sets the record straight. That being said, the discussions between Pappe and Chomsky are beneficial to anyone who wants to know how to ensure the human rights of those living under the occupation. One particular point that is essential is that the United States has to be held accountable for Israel's systematic oppression of Palestinians. This is the thrust of Noam Chomsky's critique of BDS. He believes it will be ineffective/counterproductive unless it clarifies the role the United States plays and includes it in its campaigns. What follows is an intriguing discussion between two of the most renowned scholars on this conflict regarding the solution. This is a MUST READ for pro-Palestinian activists.

Probably a realistic portrayal of the Israeli-Palestinian relationship

I find it offensive when people call Chomsky a "self-hating Jew". Why would a man of such international fame and achievement take up such a cause? Chomsky is Jewish, has a Zionist background and lived in Israel. He is critical of Israel and U.S. Foreign policy because he feels the current situation is morally reprehensible. He is not alone and his story is corroborated by others such as Chris Hedges and basically every other country other than Israel and the U.S. as well as Amnesty International and the UN. Any criticism of Israel is considered anti-semiticism. This unfortunate label guarantees the world will never solve the problem. Another label is "far left". I simply see him as a caring humanitarian.

One of the best accounts of the troublesome history of that corner of the world. Pappe's courage, his crystal-like flow of discourse make for a remarkable combination of intelligence and participation. Few people can write with similar honesty and clarity on such a muddy reality.

Animated Prof Arthur Benjamin clearly loves Mathematics and people -- the surefire mix for being a good teacher. Though Speed Math is a keen interest, his main field is in another sector of Mathematics.

People who go thru this DVD fully will learn many ways to save time in calculating and should gain better understanding of Math.
Prof Benjamin makes his subject interesting and clear.

In this well-constructed sketch of American-Iranian relations, Takeyh (senior fellow at the Council on Foreign Relations) critiques the U.S.'s unnuanced approach to Iran since its 1979 revolution as well as the failure of successive administrations to note that decades of sanctions and containment haven't significantly changed Iranian behavior. A picture emerges of a complex society marked by cultural struggle and compromise, as Takeyh criticizes the perception of Iranian politics as monolithic. He concludes that the "chimera of regime change" must finally be rejected, and pointedly observes that "it is rare... for a state that views nuclear weapons as fundamental to its security interests to dispense with such weapons under relentless threats." Takeyh urges America to look beyond President Ahmadinejad to such institutions as Iran's powerful Supreme National Security Council and Foreign Ministry, each of which distanced themselves from Ahmadinejad's anti-Israel rhetoric. Takeyh even suggests areas in which Iran and the U.S. might forge a "selective partnership"—not least their shared need for a stable Iraq. Though he occasionally slips into a too-casual assumption of the inevitability of his forecasts, Takeyh (The Receding Shadow of the Prophet) provides a well-argued, seldom heard viewpoint. (Oct.)

The current standoff between Iran and the West over Iran's nuclear ambitions appears to be a Gordian knot that some urge to be disentangled by resorting to military force. Takeyh wisely places the nuclear issue within the broader context of Iran's relations with the West, and particularly with the "Great Satan," the U.S. Within that context, Takeyh asserts that Americans have grossly misunderstood the complex realities of Iranian political life. As opposed to the image frequently shown in America--a monolithic government controlled by clerical fanatics--Takeyh presents a far more nuanced picture. Despite the recent electoral triumphs of conservative ideologies, Iran remains torn between those who seek a more secular, pluralistic state and those who hope to maintain rigid authoritarianism. The outcome is far from certain, but Takeyh insists the hostile tone emanating from the Bush administration only undermines reformers. Critics are likely to accuse Takeyh of naivete in assuming that our problems with Iran can be solved through dialogue. Still, his assertions and suggestions provide a necessary counterpoint to those who see confrontations and military conflict as inevitable. Jay Freeman

Essential Reading!!

Like many Americans, my view of Iran has been frozen at the time of the 1979 Iranian Revolution with its searing images of vitriolic anti-Americanism. Given the emerging situation in the Middle East, an updated perspective of Iran is sorely needed. Ray Takeyh does a splended job giving a very readable overview of Iran's development from the '79 revolution to the present. He is also very even-handed in addressing missed opportunities by both the U.S. and Iran in forging less antagonistic relations. Iran is a very complex country which requires others to use a nuanced approach in dealing with its tangled web of mixed tendencies. With Iranian influence currently in ascent, "Hidden Iran" is essential reading for anyone wanting to understand this country in greater depth beyond just being a member of Bush's "axis of evil."

Comprehending Modern Day Iran

Thank you Ray Takeyh for writing this informative, insightful book, written in laymen's prose, explaining the history and background that has created the Iran we face today. While not reassuring, Iran becomes not this phasmagorical evil state, but rather a nation state acting out of what it believes to be its own self interest. The final chapter dealing with Iran's entrenched hatred of a Jewish state is the most disturbing and I suspect that is why Takeyh saves it for the end. Yet it is a strange world indeed where the U.S. supplied Iraq with weapons during its decade long war with Iran, and never uttered a peep in protest to Saddam's use of nerve gas on Iraqui soldiers, even to this day, and Iran got a secret supply of weapons from -- and this will shock you -- Israel, which Takeyh infers was with U.S. knowledge and acquiescence. I highly recommend this book for anyone who wants to understand this complex and independent country.

Takeyh presents a sophisticated picture of how Iran sees the world and how the world sees Iran. There is useful history here, but most interesting here is discussion of Iran's regional ambitions and game plan for getting what it wants.
