About the Author
Thomas Sorrell received a BA in chemistry from New College (Sarasota, FL) 1973 and a PhD in organic chemistry from Stanford University in 1977. He subsequently joined the faculty at University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, where he has taught and conducted research in organic and bioinorganic chemistry. Sorrell has been named an Alfred P. Sloan Research Fellow, and he has authored two textbooks in addition to several dozen research papers.

While the textbook does contain all of the information you could possibly need for an undergraduate organic chemistry class (as well as a number of chapters no professor could possibly have time to cover in o chem 1 and o chem 2), the presentation of material leaves much to be desired. The book is very dry in my opinion, so I would recommend finding another organic chemistry textbook and use it along with this one in preparing for tests, etc.
If you find yourself struggling in either the first or second semester organic chemistry class, get the "Organic chemistry as a second language" by Klein (either 1st or 2nd semester). Seriously. The author makes it so simple you actually start liking the subject!!!

It's not the best book but if issued you will definitely use it

If your professor issues this book I highly recommend getting it. I had to read this book before and after every lecture because organic chemistry is one of those subjects that you have to stay on top of because if not you will just fall behind. This book will definitely help you but there are areas that may confuse you. There are grey areas that luckily my professor helped shed light on but if you don't need this for a class then I wouldn't recommend it. To put in perspective if you are a University of Colorado at Denver student and taking organic chemistry 1 then you will not use this book from the fall of 2012 on however if you are taking organic chemistry 2 in the fall of 2012 then you will definitely get issued this book. The reason for the confusion is because the university is getting new books for the organic chemistry department because there were so many complaints.

troubling and confusing, even my teacher stopped using it

confusing, poorly written, not organized in any way. Somewhat valuable as a reference for molecule forms and terminology but our class really didn't use the book very much. Of course we had an amazing teacher so it was hard for the book to compare.

"The literature of the classical world that has survived is a pitiful remnant of what once existed...". So begins Bernard Knox's preface to an anthology that introduces the modern reader to the enormous breadth and rich variety of that "pitiful remnant" - the foundation of Western literature and culture, the inspiration for writers from Dante to Shakespeare to T. S. Eliot. However much - or little - of it we may have read, classical literature has shaped our world and how we perceive it. Yet for most of us classical writing is little more than a narrow circle of legendary figures. The names of Homer, Aeschylus, Plato, Virgil, and Saint Augustine are familiar, but behind their work lies a vast fellowship of writers with a common mythological and artistic heritage. The Norton Book of Classical Literature thus includes not only the "greats" but also significant though lesser known figures and traditions: archaic lyric poets, Alexandrian Greeks, and Roman satirists, for example. Also recovered for us are the breathtaking variety of forms that literature took - epic, lyric, ode, dithyramb, tragedy, comedy, history, dialogue, idyll, epigram, satire, to name a few. The translations selected for this collection, from classic nineteenth-century versions to as yet unpublished manuscripts, reflect the diversity of the works themselves and bring them to us with eloquence and clarity. A Great Buy And A Wonderful Resource

This anthology stands head and shoulders above the competition, such as the Portable Greek and Roman readers for a number of reasons, not the least of which are the fresh, modern translations of these very well-chosen ancient works. Others include its size (ca. 850 large pages) and high quality as a book, and, of course, its contents, which range from Homer to Augustine.
About 2/3 of the volume is devoted to Greek literature, with about 200 pages of that being Homer and Hesiod. Early poets are well represented from Sappho to the obscure. A complete translation of "Antigone" is included, as well as a generous sampling of other plays by Aechylus, Euripides, etc. Herodotus, Thucidides, Plato, Aristotle and many little known Hellenistic items appear. From Rome, Vergil, Lucretius, Marcus Aurelius, and various poetic and theatrical works.
The book does leave you wanting more. Fortunately, after reading this, you will have a much better idea about what you want more of!

This book is for everyone

Knox's fine Classical Literature really deserves four and a half stars; I just can't figure out how to put on that extra half a star. Truly, this is a superb piece of editing-- Knox has chosen wisely , including well-known classical works, Homer, Aeschylus, Euripides, as well as more obscure works. The book runs the whole gamut of Greek and Roman literature, giving a tantalizing taste of each. Often the lesser-known works are the most interesting. I was fascinated. Knox also gives details about the lives and times of the authors that are interesting and engaging. Also, I appreciated Knox's interest in providing the most reader-friendly versions of the pieces. Sometimes he alternates translators to show how different people have read the great works, and in some cases, Propertius in particular, he offers great literary translations (such as one by Ezra Pound) alongside a more faithful translation. There is so much to say for this book. You will want to read more. There is one cause for frustration though, and that is in Knox's approach to giving liner notes. He gives all notes up-front in the introduction to each piece where a footnote or endnote might have been more convenient to the reader-- they must go back to the intro if they've forgotten what something meant. Other than smoe confusion with editorial notes, this book is wonderful and well worth your time.

Best of its kind - good selections, informative comments

A wide-ranging and cunningly chosen set of texts and translations and a generous set of elegantly written introductions make this a first-rate anthology. I am not very widely read in the classics, but I showed the book to a friend who is, and he was delighted to find many selections with which he was unfamiliar. Reading this book made we want to run out and get another whole shelf-full of complete works.

I was not happy about having to buy this book and I was even more unhappy to get it and find out it was loose leaf. Probably wouldn't have paid for this version had I known. I thought I was getting hard back. Especially when I'm dropping a few hundred bucks on it. But the book content is good. Low score for the seller not the book.

About the Author

Janet Peacock is Professor of Medical Statistics in the Department of Public Health Sciences and Medical Statistics, University of Southampton School of Medicine, where she leads the discipline of Medical Statistics.
She previously worked for over 20 years at St George's University of London. There she worked with Martin Bland and Sally Kerry with whom she has co-authored two books, Statistical Questions in Evidence-based Medicine (with Martin Bland) and Presenting Medical Statistics from proposal to publication (with Sally Kerry). She has always been enthusiastic about teaching medical statistics to medical students, doctors, and other health professionals, and is passionate about communicating the subject clearly. During her career to date she has collaborated with a wide range of health professionals in numerous epidemiological studies, randomised controlled trials and meta-analyses.


Phil qualified in medicine at Bristol in 2007 and is currently working as an Academic Clinical Fellow at the University of Bristol alongside specialty training in paediatrics within the Severn Deanery. He has been involved in research projects both as an undergraduate and since qualifying, and has produced several publications. Phil enjoys combining medical research with clinical practice, and is keen to help others understand and get involved with the research process.

Great handbook

The authors managed to include amazingly large amount of important material in this little handbook. The book covers a wide variety of statistical procedures. Perhaps the best review book out there. Great job.

Well targeted to medical practitioners

I had one undergraduate course in stochastic modeling and another in data mining. Basically, anyone with a course or two in statistics for non-math majors can directly apply what they learned to bio-medicine with the help of this book. Although ostensibly aimed at practicing physicians, as a healthcare IT person, I found this book helpful. I use it as if I were using a recipe book.

Truth with consequences

Great information. There were two Hera's then. Hera in this story is not wife of Zeus. She was a list person not even of this planet. Lizard like appearance who wanted to look like us and Zeus didn't care at the time. Later He agreed she was no good for anything or anyone. The story of his needs for this person ended too soon Hera alien from green ribbon when boy grew up as man of woman raped fought the bear and both were killed by Zeus to release the problem. The constellation Clerous of our galaxy which part of red ribbon was name such to show she was wronged. Her son has a moon named after him called Perious.We know w we this planet of red ribbon by our color of blood. The Hera list green ribbon color of blood same. However she called it red because color blind.

Greek Gods and ancient romance. Not sure if Callisto would still be alive after spouting off. But Hey that's whats not only sexy about this story but intriguing. I found myself clearly on one side of this story rooting for .. well I will let you guess. But I am sure if you like these types of reads you will be in my boat. Doesn't bore you with drawn out emptiness but keeps it nicely turning and reeling you to the next page. You will enjoy it enough to recommend it like me! Now give me some NYX! Wait Callisto might get in a cat fight with her! Lol.

A nice surprise

This book was recommended to me by a friend, and I picked it up because I am a mythology buff. I don't read a lot of romance, but I found the romantic backstory of the greek gods to be very engaging -- I was pleasantly surprised, and it looks like I am a fan after all! Well written, good pace, and just dark enough to be engaging without being disturbing. I will look forward to the next one in the series!
