Good Fundamentals

There are many good books with this title or similar ones. This is probably one of the better ones for your bookshelf and for use in academia. The examples are written in Java (a current language) and they are easy to read. The presentation is clean and illustrative. The authors have a good track record for expertise and papers published, and you get the sense that it is more real-world than most similar books.

Do yourself a favor and dont buy this book

Though I am a member of Amazon for years, and purchased many books, this is my first review about a book. It`s 2 am, and I am trying to understand the book`s questions, as a PhD student for hours. I took algorithms course before when I was getting my MS in a different university, where we were using Cormen & Leiserson`s book, I was liking this course and having no problems, I also watched all the MIT OCW`s lectures from Leiserson and the other young professor, and I can say I was totally comfortable with subjects. Algorithm was a course I was liking till I came across with that book.

However, this book became my nightmare with its ambiguities, poorly written sentences, ambiguous questions. I asked TA about some questions, and for every and every question I asked, she said `oh yes, this was not clear for other students too, so we thought this may be ...` And the hard part about questions are understanding the question, not solving it. This incidence happened in a 2nd tier(top 30) US university, in a graduate course.

What can I say? What is the reason and justification to write such a book?

I think, during my life I used over 40 textbooks, this one without doubt is in top 3 in worst text book lists (with Mark Weiss`s Data Structures, and Sedra& Smith`s microelectronics). I am giving two stars because they made at least a website, though I cant say its very helpful, they continue to being ambiguous even in the hints they say.

The book is so dull that, by just inspecting introduction which tells Archimed`s history (which became a cliche even in high school books and irrelevant to the introduction and algorithms in general) you can see this. Then look at Sedgewick`s introduction about an efficient algorithm finding prime numbers, Knuth`s introduction about roots of algorithm word etc...

I recommend Cormen`s or Sedgewick`s books, actually I cant imagine a worse book than that, if I had written something only that can be worser, but I am not claiming I am a good writer/author (as it can be seen from this review). I am sorry for writing such a harsh review, but my advice if you see a course offering this textbook, please refrain for taking the course for your good.

A good introduction text to algorithms

I would not consider this book as the ultimate book for algorithms as the title suggests. :-) However, it is a very readable book, and filled with brief, but concise observations. Do not get me wrong. This book also has very detailed explanations of fundamental data structures and algorithms.
Also, the best part of the book is that it lists good references for further readings. I loved this book. I would suggest this book to others. Math hints at the back of the books are useful, and some excercises are quite brain challenging. I think it is a great practice for students, but it is not so fun when students get it for assignments. :-)

In theory...this is thought provoking

If you are looking for an interesting (read: didactic) perspective of the intersection of education, home, and church, this book provides it. But, buyer beware...I'm not sure how practical his approach is in today's society, or at least in my community. I had to read this for class, but being a product of Christian School education, I found some nuggets of truth, but by far and away more dictating the ideal, rather than the real. There were some very convicting aspects, such as the responsibility parents need to take in being responsible for their children's education, but by and large, I found myself wondering how realistic his perspective really is.

What Kind of Education Should Today's Youth Receive?

I was given Kingdom Education by a fellow administrator a couple of years ago, but I just finished the 180 page book. It is required reading for an M.Ed. class I will be taking in a few months. This 16 chapter book is divided into five "Kingdom Education" sections:

1. Its Definition, Purpose, and Result
2. The Role of the Home
3. The Role of the Church
4. The Role of the School
5. The Future

Dr. Schultz's main message is that parents must ensure that their children receive an education that is biblically based. The local church must work with parents and teachers so that every child has the opportunity to receive an education that is Christ-centered. Some of what Dr. Schultz shares about public schools will likely be a surprise to many, and opinions will definitely be formed.

I believe Dr. Schultz's book has a good message. It is loaded with Scripture, and it is evident that Dr. Schultz desires the best for young people. I do think more practical solutions as to how to make Christian education a possibility for everyone would make this book even better. Church buildings definitely need to be more than a Sunday and Wednesday meeting place as Dr. Schultz stated, but much needs to change about our thinking in order for all young people to have the opportunity to receive a Christian education. Getting a Christian education is expensive, and there are many who simply cannot afford it. What can we do to make Christian schooling affordable to all? There are many Christian schools that are lacking creativity and a challenging curriculum. How can we better engage our minds and be producers instead of imitators?

I would have also liked for Dr. Schultz to write his book with a more international mindset and provide more information concerning some of the statistics he used and statements he said about America's youth. I do not want these minor criticisms to come across as if Kingdom Education is not worth reading. I am thankful to have read the book and feel Kingdom Education is an excellent book for Christians to discuss if they have anything to do with teaching today's youth. Beautiful, soulful look into the making of a man

This book captured my attention with the beautiful cover and the intriguing title. I have always known Amy for her Scottish Highland historical romances. When I read the synopsis I did not hesitate to pick up my copy. Koicto is a teenager, and much like teenagers of today he has a plan for his life and rankles when told his plan doesn't matter. Watching him mature into his roles as husband and chief is pure delight. Amy weaves scenes in your mind with a beautiful prose. The description of the people, their way of life and there land are compelling. The Nachee Nation is fictional and yet to the reader they exist.

She studied me."I think you are trying to put the litter before the dog."

"What?" Where did she come up with that?

"You have to take first things first. The way I see it is you should be happy because the Elders have arranged your match. Though you've got to be terrified because you've never met your bride." She held up her finger as if she'd had a brilliant idea. "I think you need to focus on one fact- you will be wed and have a lifetime for your love to grow."

Bright beautiful story of innocents, honor, bravery, survival and coming of age.

I loved the way this story unfolded, fast pace yet with detailed vivid characters. What a fun read, about a subject I knew very little about. I stopped and researched the terms that were new to me, and it became even richer. This writer did her research, and it translated into a wonderful easy escape with very worthy well intended characters so alive, I believed I was living a piece of my life with them for a bit. It left me feeling hopeful and smiling as true life does many times. Good story. Thank you Amy- Kenya Walker

Loved this Native American story of old.

This is a book that I would recommend to even the children to read. The research on this book was extensive. It is a web of Native American legends and stories that was well executed and told with passion. You will not be sorry that you have bought this book. It is a keeper!! Congratulations Amy on this book. Well done. I will have to get a paperback also.

About the Author
Paul Hancock has been doing research on shipwrecks since the age of ten when a section of a hull floated ashore near his parents' summer home on Lake Michigan. The section was around 150 feet in length and no wider than 20 feet. It came from the schooner Lark which sank in 1867. He graduated from Michigan State University with a degree in Geography in 1997 and works as a computer programmer and at Indiana University as an instructor in the Business School. His interest in shipwrecks and computers led to him setting up a website, www.wrecks.net, in 1996, which currently holds records of around 12,000 shipwrecks.

An overdue easy-to-digest explanation

This is a vital book for anyone involved with any aspect of HIV. Without going to the question of whether she is right or wrong (and I think she is right), I will say that the book is good in that it is easily approachable. HIV books are often, necessarily, mired in dense medical and biological terms ("non-nucleoside reverse transcriptase inhibitors"). This book shines in its ability to explain those terms simply and effectively.
My only complaint here is that nearly half the book is either references or appendices -- ancilliary material. While that's certainly helpful and appreciated, it leaves the reader with little more than a big pamphlet.
Still, it's a great book to read, especially at a low price.

Not a drop of smugness

This book gives a balanced, scientifically verifiable assessment of the HIV/AIDS hypothesis/debate. NOWHERE in this book does Ms. Maggiore come across as smug or arrogant, or 'ha ha, I'm alive, you're dead' as one reviewer so idiotically put it. Her writing is concise, to the point, and devoid of mere opinions. The people who have written scathing criticisms of this book either did not read the entire book, or perhaps have reading comprehension difficulties. An excellent short summary, and a good lead-in to Peter Duesberg's seminal work "Inventing the AIDS Virus." Read it with your brain turned on. The AIDS issue in the U.S., as Ms. Maggiore put it so well, is a clear case of the victory of Politics over Science, Religion over Reason. Science is not about 'silencing' other theories and hypotheses that one doesn't agree with. Leave that sort of facism to tele-evangelists. If it were so, we would still be using leaches to cure disease.

About the Author

Melinda Thielbar is a teacher, statistician, and economist who has written mathematics courses at many different levels. In 2005, Melinda was awarded a VIGRE fellowship at North Carolina State University for doctoral candidates "likely to make a strong contribution to education in mathematics." She expects to complete her PhD in 2010. Melinda lives in Raleigh, NC with her husband, author and videogame programmer Richard Dansky�--This text refers to the�Library Binding�edition.

A valuable resource to students, educators, and parents

"The Secret Ghost: A Mystery with Distance and Measurement" is the third book in an outstanding Manga Math Mystery series and involves a "haunted" house where Sam and Michelle have moved to live with their dad. They receive help from Kung Fu friends Amy and Tom who help them use measuring tools to calculate distance, volume, and areas to enable them to solve the mystery of Michelle's secret ghost. Colorful Manga illustrations tell the story and keep interest high. Aside from teaching basic measuring and logical problem solving skills, "The Secret Ghost" contains some positive subtext suggestions, such as that children of different ethnicities can be closely related as well as good friends, and former bullies can become friends and heroes, and finally, children who are not ridiculed for having fears can be empowered to investigate and resolve their fears. "The Secret Ghost" will appeal to elementary and middle school age children, and will be a valuable resource to students, educators, and parents.

Love this series-and so do my students. The books provide a challenge in math along with reading in the form of a graphic novel. What more could I ask for as a teacher?
