Should be called "how to have a 1950s marriage when she makes more"
By Jordan Lay
I don't even know where to start with this. I don't leave bad reviews, but this was the worst. I guess I'm not the target audience, because I'm a happily married female professional working in a male dominated field, and my husband is extremely helpful/understanding, even though I make more (gasp). My summary for the entire book is pretty much this: unsubstantiated DNA claims, rude spouses who clearly have given up (does the gender really matter, wouldn't men be pissed if they had lazy wives??), advice such as "let your man be chivalrous to feel like a man!", and plenty other ridiculous claims. What's worse is that these claims have limited factual basis. Sure, there are plenty of statistics, upwards of 15 on some pages (that I've definitely forgotten. I would love to know what Malcolm Gladwell would say about all of the causal factor statistic assumptions). My running theory while reading this is that all of the different studies and numbers she uses are to distract when chapters are validated by "someone I interviewed named Melanie", which is a recurring occurrence. There are several opinions and theories that are presented as fact, it's almost alarming. I really challenge anyone who has read/will read this book to question how much our female brains are hard wired to rely on men (which is presented as "politically incorrect, but just fact"). Several things here: first, if we relied on men for hunting, then why would women have wasted their time gathering. Second, it was men and elderly who were primarily child care givers while the women were gathering. Hunts were not everyday affairs, and the men had plenty of leisure time. Additionally, there is so much marriage advice that's completely unrelated to finances. I just really didn't need to read about one counselers suggestion to have a decade long marriage contract to foster open communication. Save yourself time, don't read this book. Get 'Overwhelmed: work love and play when no one has the time" for some real advice..

Farnoosh Torabi's "When She Makes More" has not only been ...
By Ben Getto
Farnoosh Torabi's "When She Makes More" has not only been helpful in my own family but helpful to countless friends and family members that I've shared it with after my wife and I both read it. The biggest take away was how to manage money in our relationship without my wife feeling stressed and me feeling left out. It was extremely helpful for my wife in understanding that its okay if the division of labor isn't 50/50 since I contribute in ways beyond household chores and money--taking our daughter to school, picking her up, doing the grocery shopping, handling all the bills, and almost all of the cooking. This book breaks down a ton of stereotypes while applying the ones that were particularly true in our family--and helping us to continue to manage raising a family without our own relationship breaking down. Thanks for writing such a helpful book!

Take What You Will, Use a Grain of Salt, but a Thought Provoking Read
By MeatFan45
This book was thought-provoking and a good reminder that we ALL need to iron out our money issues with our partners -- whether married, not-married, domestic partners, dating, or man/woman/queer/transgendered, though I do fault the book a bit for speaking to its audience as if, as a breadwinning woman, being *married* to a *man* is assumed (and not one of many ways to live, whose money issues would still be actionable using the advice in this book if it's language reflected that -- and it's too bad the author let herself be vulnerable to attack on this front). The financial suggestions are solid regardless (if a bit gendered/old-fashioned) but I applaud the author for tackling them just the same, since few others have come out with practical advice on the subject. Best advice in the book is to tackle a "Yours, Mine, Ours" spilt and, though it will be controversial to many, to think in terms of being available to your kids when they get a bit older, when they remember and need complicated guidance navigating friends, school and bullying -- rather than pulling your hair out trying to make staying at home work when an infants needs are comparatively simple.
