Realism vs Idealism
By Leonard J. Wilson
Does America Need a Foreign Policy? by Henry Kissinger was published in 2001, shortly before 9/11. In the current paperback edition, he has added an Afterword on 9/11 and terrorism. While the Afterword is helpful, what is remarkable is how relevant his pre-9/11 text remains in the post-9/11 world.

Kissinger's title question is purely rhetorical. Of course America needs a foreign policy. His point in the title appears to be that American foreign policy has too often been the subject of domestic political campaigns which are focused more on electing the next president than on the country's real, long-term interests. This is a theme that he shares with the late George Kennan.

Kissinger's text follows a straightforward outline: Suggestions for US foreign policy with regard to Europe, the Western Hemisphere, Asia, the Middle East and Africa, Globalization, and "Peace and Justice". I'll say more on this topic below.

Throughout the text, Kissinger advocates his standard theme of realism versus idealism, as he did in his magnificent prior work, Diplomacy. As a brief example, he points out that a seemingly desirable goal such as the peaceful reunification of Korea may not be as desirable as it might seem at first glance. A unified Korea, he points out, would become a major economic, political, and military power in East Asia. A more robust Korea might be seen as a threat by Japan, thereby destabilizing the current US-Japanese-South Korean alignment. Seeing a unified Korea as a threat, Japan might be tempted to go nuclear and withdraw from its close ties with the US. Do we really want this?

The theme of realism versus idealism becomes particularly pronounced in the chapter on "Peace and Justice". Kissinger's point here is that the basis for diplomacy established by the Peace of Westphalia (1648) was that the governments of the European powers agreed to:

* Deal with other governments as the sole, legitimate diplomatic representatives of their countries, regardless of the level of cordiality or hostility between them

* Refrain from interfering in the internal affairs of other nation-states, specifically religious affiliations, which were the basis for the preceding Thirty Years War which had devastated Europe

These precepts held sway until WWI when the US President, Woodrow Wilson, injected a strong theme of idealism when the US entered the war. His goals were (1) self determination of nationalities, regardless of prior national boundaries, (2) "making the world safe for democracy", and (3) collective security. These goals flew in the face of the Westphalian accords by postulating the existence of a higher (but undefined) diplomatic/legal/moral authority that took precedence over peaceful relations between established governments.

This issue is of particular importance today as it underlies many aspects of US foreign policy. Without offering answers, I'll pose the following dilemmas which Kissinger's book brings to mind:

* There appears to be an inherent conflict between the goals of maintaining peace among nations (diplomacy based on realism, the Westphalian accord) and supporting idealistic goals generally accepted by Americas, including democracy and human rights in other nations (diplomacy based on idealism, the Wilsonian approach). Can we achieve both peace and our idealistic goals? If not, how do we prioritize between them?

* Legal structures in the West, especially Anglo-American legal structures, are based on the mutual acceptance by all parties (or at least most parties) of the existing legal system as a means of settling differences within nations. The concept of "international law" among nations is not so well defined and certainly lacks the level of universal acceptance required to make it effective.

There are tough questions. I thank Kissinger (and Kennan) for helping articulate them. Solving them will be up to their successors.

One view on how US Foreign Policy should be
By Hussain Abdul-Hussain
This book is a treatise from America's top expert on diplomacy Henry Kissinger about the United States foreign policy in a post-Cold War world. It is unfortunate that the book was written before 9/11 and the start of the war on terrorism, save for a brief afterward that is mostly in line with Kissinger's pre 9/11 views.

The book is entertaining and put in a very organized sequence. It highlights the cross Atlantic world leading American-European alliance and offers fresh perspective on how these relations should develop as the European Union gains shape and witnesses a surge in its economic, demographic and geographic might.

Kissinger also talks about other regions in the world including the Middle East and Africa. The book has a much needed historical background about all of the events that it discusses making it easier for readers who are not familiar with overseas issues to get a grasp of what the author is talking about. Kissinger then gives his recommendations on how America should handle its world affairs in the coming century.

He debates the United States role in a growingly globalized world and offers suggestions on how America should deal with global organizations such as the World Trade Organization and the World Bank.

Kissinger sounds more often than not a traditionalist in his foreign policy perspective in that he doesn't view fighting terrorism as the world's top priority. He rather maintains a tone of what America should do to maintain its "assets" and "strategic interests" around the world and how this would define America's role making or breaking of world affairs.

The book also lacks accurate research and is kind of a blown up opinion. For example, Kissinger mentions a ruling Sunni majority in Iraq and an opposing two minority blocs, the Shiites and Kurds. It is a known fact, however, that the Shiites are the Iraqi majority.

A Diplomatic World Tour
By J. head
Dr. Kissinger dissects the world into their geopolitical grouping, and discusses where current trends are taking each group. The book may be a little outdated since 911 and world terrorism was pushed to front stage, but generally the geopolitical groups remain. A united Europe dealing with a Russia once again as a rising power, the Middle East and the consequences of China becoming a mature power. As a reader that was of draft age during the Vietnam war it was ironic to read that Dr.Kissinger believes that the USA should not be a major player in the far East, but a better plan would be to play the power broker for the rivaling countries referencing Britain's role in regard to the powers on the European continent during the era of Napoleon.

This book is an easy read, very understandable. I read this book because the USA is always criticized for having no foreign policy every time World events hit us broadside.

Three Stalks Of Corn is great for children.
By Mark DeShazo
Politi does a great job of conveying a culture that is beautiful and real. The story shows how wonderful family is and how resourceful we can be. It is also educational showing some Spanish words and giving their English meaning. It also demonstrates Mexican cooking and includes a couple of recipes in the back of the book. This book isn't very long and is certainly worth sitting down and reading with your child.

Our Right to Drugs: The Case for a Free Market, by Thomas Szasz

.In Our Right to Drugs, Thomas Szasz shows that our present drug war started at the beginning of this century, when the American government first assumed the task of protecting people from patent medicines. By the end of World War I, however, the free market in drugs was but a dim memory, if that. Instead of dwelling on the familiar impracticality or unfairness of our drug laws, Szasz demonstrates the deleterious effects of prescription laws which place people under lifelong medical tutelage. The result is that most Americans today prefer a coercive and corrupt command drug economy to a free market in drugs.

Throughout the book, Szasz stresses the consequences of the fateful transformation of the central aim of American drug prohibitions from protecting us from being fooled by misbranded drugs to protecting us from harming ourselves by self-medication--defined as drug abuse. And he reminds us that the choice between self-control and state coercion applies to all areas of our lives, drugs being but one of the theaters in which this perennial play may be staged. A free society, Szasz emphasizes, cannot endure if its citizens reject the values of self-discipline and personal responsibility and if the state treats adults as if they were naughty children. In a no-holds-barred examination of the implementation of the War on Drugs, Szasz shows that under the guise of protecting the vulnerable members of our society--especially children, blacks, and the sick--our government has persecuted and injured them. Leading politicians persuade parents to denounce their children, and encourage children to betray their parents and friends--behavior that subverts family loyalties and destroys basic human decency. And instead of protecting blacks and Hispanics from dangerous drugs, this holy war has allowed us to persecute them, not as racists but as therapists--working selflessly to bring about a drug-free America. Last but not least, to millions of sick Americans, the War on Drugs has meant being deprived of the medicines they want-- because the drugs are illegal, unapproved here though approved abroad, or require a prescription a physician may be afraid to provide. The bizarre upshot of our drug policy is that many Americans now believe they have a right to die, which they will do anyway, while few believe they have a right to drugs, even though that does not mean they have to take any. Often jolting, always stimulating, Our Right to Drugs is likely to have the same explosive effect on our ideas about drugs and drug laws as, more than thirty years ago, The Myth of Mental Illness had on our ideas about insanity and psychiatry.

From Publishers Weekly
The "war on drugs," charges Szasz, is a hypocritical moral crusade, a pretext for strengthening the state and scapegoating deviants. It is also racist, he asserts, pointing out that blacks are arrested on drug charges at a rate far out of proportion to their drug use. In a hard-hitting, controversial polemic, the well-known critic of psychiatry ( The Myth of Mental Illness ) advocates a free market in drugs, both for pharmaceutical medicines (including opiates) and for substances like heroin and marijuana. Szasz believes that state-sanctioned coercions to protect people from their own vices are futile and violate our fundamental rights. Futher, he maintains that labeling drug abuse as illness medicalizes a social problem and helps turn drug abusers into lifelong patients. In his blueprint for decriminalization, states could ground motorists whose driving ability is endangered by drug use; he also supports compulsory drug testing in occupations where a worker's impairment jeopardizes public safety.

From Kirkus Reviews
Szasz (Psychiatry/SUNY at Syracuse) at his abrasive best, skewering the shibboleths of the War On Drugs and giving historical context to the current national hubbub. The prohibition of drugs abrogates our constitutional right to property; Americans have lost the freedom to control their bodies; until 1914, Americans had unrestricted access to drugs of their choice without government control of the market: Thus begins this reasoned and passionate treatise, in which Szasz denounces both the prohibitionists (``the War On Drugs is itself a giant quackery'') and the legalizers--``paternalistic prohibitionists'' whose agenda, the author says, is to transfer control of drugs to the medical system and to continue prohibiting substances, albeit only certain ones (e.g., tobacco rather than marijuana). After a scathing indictment of Nancy Reagan's ``moronic anti-drug slogan'' and her encouragement of children who report their drug-using parents to the police, Szasz dissects a cast of antidrug crusaders (Father Bruce Ritter, Betty Ford, Kitty Dukakis, William Bennett) and concludes that drug education is the ``name we give to the state-sponsored effort to inflame people's hatred and intolerance of other people's drug habits.'' Turning to legalization proponents--Lester Grinspoon, Ethan Nadelman, Eric Sterling, William F. Buckley, Jr.--Szasz analyzes their proposals as new prohibition schemes. Why do we fear making drugs freely available? Because people would choose ``an easy life of parasitism over a hard life of productivity'' and become ``drug-crazed'' criminals? According to Szasz, economic productivity, crucial for the survival of society, has ``nothing to do with drugs but has everything to do with family stability, cultural values, education, and social policies.'' And, as for crime, it is caused not by drugs but by their prohibition. Places the rhetoric and the players in clear positions on the board, whether or not you agree with the Szasz prescription. -- Copyright 1992, Kirkus Associates, LP. All rights reserved.

"While never departing from the moral principles surrounding the issues of drug use, Szasz makes his point in direct, simple, and occasionally astonishing fashion, namely, that every American has the right to possess and use drugs with the same freedom that attaches to any other specie of property.... What is so compelling and provocative about this book is its rational and coldly logical treatment of the issues from within an internally coherent and not unreasonable perspective of the individual and our contemporary society. Thus Our Right to Drugs can and ought to cause us to reconsider our own views about the autonomy, dignity, and moral responsibility of the individual, and the sphere in which the constitutionally empowered and constrained government of the United States may function legitimately."-Northwestern University Law Review

"U.S. citizens have a right to personal property: drugs are property, therefore we have a right to obtain and use them when we want them: the U.S., however, has become a therapeutic state that restricts the availability of drugs: furthermore, drug use is labeled a disease and blamed for many crimes and untoward events that would not happen if drugs were freely available . . . He frequently states there is no need to control drugs--but he does not mention the many lives formerly lost to children's remedies laced with opium or to vaccines that, due to manufacturer accident, contained poisons. He maintains athletes should be allowed to use drugs freely to make competition fair. After reading such arguments, you might assume he even favors drug use while piloting a car or airplane; yet three paragraphs before book's end, he allows that these activities should be drug-free. Szasz does make some good points. It's hard, for instance, to argue against this pronouncement: The War on Drugs has had many undesirable consequences, not least among them the mass production of experts on drug abuse."-Booklist

"Szasz (Professor Emeritus of Psychiatry, State University of New York, Syracuse) holds numerous awards and has written many stimulating books on mental illness. With this book he challenges US society to take a fresh look at its drug problem and the way in which its government is responding to the misuse of drugs by some of its citizens. Szasz describes how the current debate on drugs is based on a collective ignorance of the facts and issues and on inability to learn from history. He then goes on to cover issues such as the rights citizens rejected; liberty versus utopia; drugs as scapegoats; the cult of drug disinformation; the lie of legalization; perils of prohibition; and the burden of choice. Szasz makes a persuasive case for a reevaluation of US drug policy within the context of liberty and human responsibility in a democratic society. This book is well written, the arguments are clear and concise, and the logic effective. Excellent notes section and a very useful bibliography. Must read for anyone seriously interested in drugs and how US society is managing them. All libraries."-Choice

All libraries.?-Choice

?Szasz at his abrasive best, skewering the shibboleths of the War On Drugs and giving historical context to the current national hubbub. The prohibition of drugs abrogates our constitutional right to property; Americans have lost the freedom to control their bodies; until 1914, Americans had unrestricted access to drugs of their choice without government control of the market: Thus begins this reasoned and passionate treatise, in which Szasz denounces both the prohibitionists ("the War On Drugs is itself a giant quackery") and the legalizers--"paternalistic prohibitionists" whose agenda, the author says, is to transfer control of drugs to the medical system and to continue prohibiting substances, albeit only certain ones (e.g., tobacco rather than marijuana). After a scathing indictment of Nancy Reagan's "moronic anti-drug slogan" and her encouragement of children who report their drug-using parents to the police, Szasz dissects a cast of antidrug crusaders (Father Bruce Ritter, Betty Ford, Kitty Dukakis, William Bennett) and concludes that drug education is the "name we give to the state-sponsored effort to inflame people's hatred and intolerance of other people's drug habits." Turning to legalization proponents--Lester Grinspoon, Ethan Nadelman, Eric Sterling, William F. Buckley, Jr.--Szasz analyzes their proposals as new prohibition schemes. Why do we fear making drugs freely available? Because people would choose "an easy life of parasitism over a hard life of productivity" and become "drug-crazed" criminals? According to Szasz, economic productivity, crucial for the survival of society, has "nothing to do with drugs but has everything to do with family stability, cultural values, education, and social policies." And, as for crime, it is caused not by drugs but by their prohibition. Places the rhetoric and the players in clear positions on the board, whether or not you agree with the Szasz prescription.?-Kirkus Reviews

"Dr. Szasz has written a profound analysis of the moral issues raised by the prohibition of drugs. Whether you favor or oppose our present drug policy, reading this book will transform your understanding of the real issues involved."-Milton Friedman Senior Research Fellow Hoover Institution, and Nobel Laureate in Economics

DRUG TRUTH
By TinsleyGreySammons
I purchased my first copy of OUR RIGHT TO DRUGS almost twenty years ago. I have purchased many copies since and will never be without a copy. OUR RIGHT TO DRUGS has been instrumental in the creation of AMERICA'S FORSAKEN PROMISE. (AMERICA'S FORSAKEN PROMISE can be examined online. Simply Google: scribd and search for it.)

No American concerned with the demise of constitutional American liberty that began in earnest in 1912 should be without a copy of OUR RIGHT TO DRUGS and AMERICA'S FORSAKEN PROMISE. Getting the pursuit of the idea we call America back on course must begin with an across the board repeal of de facto Drug Prohibition. Crush that abomination and the precedent will cause other unlawful powers to fall like a row of dominoes.

Open Letter: On Blasphemy, Islamophobia, and the True Enemies of Free Expression, by Charb

An impassioned defense of the freedom of speech, from Stphane Charbonnier, a journalist murdered for his convictions

On January 7, 2015, two gunmen stormed the offices of the French satirical newspaper Charlie Hebdo. They took the lives of twelve men and women, but they called for one man by name: "Charb."

Known by his pen name, Stphane Charbonnier was editor in chief of Charlie Hebdo, an outspoken critic of religious fundamentalism, and a renowned political cartoonist in his own right. In the past, he had received death threats and had even earned a place on Al Qaeda's "Most Wanted List." On January 7 it seemed that Charb's enemies had finally succeeded in silencing him. But in a twist of fate befitting Charb's defiant nature, it was soon revealed that he had finished a book just two days before his murder on the very issues at the heart of the attacks: blasphemy, Islamophobia, and the necessary courage of satirists.

Here, published for the first time in English, is Charb's final work. A searing criticism of hypocrisy and racism, and a rousing, eloquent defense of free speech, Open Letter shows Charb's words to be as powerful and provocative as his art. This is an essential book about race, religion, the voice of ethnic minorities and majorities in a pluralistic society, and above all, the right to free expression and the surprising challenges being leveled at it in our fraught and dangerous time.

Review
"As the first anniversary of the Charlie Hebdo massacre approaches--fresh off the recent attacks in Paris, new cries of Islamophobia and new debates over Muslim immigration --Charb's final words will have to stand in for him. They do so, ably."―Michael Cavna, Washington Post

About the Author
Charb (Stphane Charbonnier) (1967-2015) was a French journalist, political cartoonist, and satirist. Born and raised outside of Paris, Charb honed his drawing skills as a teenager and contributed illustrations to his college newspaper and local publications. He joined the staff of Charlie Hebdo in 1992 and held the position of editor in chief from 2009 until his death in 2015. An atheist, pacifist, and staunch advocate of free speech, Charb was known for cartoons that mocked political figures and organized religion.

Free Expression Is Not Safe Expression
By Brian Murphy
January 7th 2016 marked one year since the attack on Charlie Hebdo in which the author of this letter Stphane Charbonnier (Charb) and 11 others were killed by Islamic terrorists. This letter was actually finished just days before that attack and has since been translated into the English version we have here.

In the letter Charb makes a compelling case for free speech and lambastes leftists (a political leaning which he supports) and others who cry foul at the criticism of ideas. Free speech (among other things) is a liberal ideal but unfortunately over the past decade or more many members of the left seem to have fallen out of favor with it. Of course they won't admit this themselves, but when they cry racism, Islamophobia, and other nonsense they deny valid criticisms. Islam is not a race, it is an ideology, just like Christianity, liberalism, conservatism, and many other sets of ideas.

It is quite ironic that people would direct these claims of bigotry towards periodicals like Charlie Hebdo considering they are strongly anti-racism and fight for the rights of minorities and all citizens. This misrepresentation and/or misunderstanding flies right in the face of what free speech stands for; ideas deserve to be criticized, both the true and the false; if an idea is true it will withstand the criticism, and if it is false it is even more deserving of criticism and derision.

No one should have to fear for their life simply because they criticized or supported an idea and we certainly shouldn't have to take back the expression of these ideas simply because it upsets people. People can become upset by any number of ridiculous things, even the most mundane and trivial. Unfortunately Charb and his colleagues died because of their free expression; we shouldn't let that right die with them.

A Rallying Cry for Free Speech, A Bold Strike Against the Regressive Left and Islamism.
By Truth Revolt
First and foremost, this book is an unapologetic stand for free speech, freedom of thought, and freedom to offend. Hurting someone's feelings is not a crime....this is the power of secularism (which most of the Islamic world lacks). Every idea, person, and belief is fair game. It is not Islamophobic to criticize bad Islamic ideas, just like it's not Mormonphobic to criticize bad Momon ideas. By misusing the term Islamophobia, the regressive left has diluted its meaning, smeared moderate Muslims (like the courageous Maajid Nawaaz Islam and the Future of Tolerance: A Dialogue, Zuhdi Jasser, Raheel Raza, and Asra Nomani), and actually hurt Muslims who do suffer from discrimination. As the book argues, freedom of speech is not a value that can be compromised for any group (Muslims, Catholics, Mormons, etc.) otherwise we are simply complying with their blasphemy laws and allowing the theocracy and tyranny of religion to apply to ALL of society (including non-Muslims). Many religious ideas are some of the worst mankind has ever created and it is a moral necessity to criticize them. Did you know a 2013 Pew Poll showed that 27% of Muslims worldwide believe ex-Muslims should DIE for leaving the religion? Just imagine if 27% of Christians thought ex-Christians should die. The regressive left would be going ape s***. Let us keep the good ideas of all religions and criticize the oppressive ones.

'Open Letter' is also a plea for liberals to wake the hell up. For years the regressive left has naively denied Islamic inspired oppression and failed to see the political side of Islam (Islamism) and the conservative religious side. They've failed to distinguish between those who think men are superior to women, those who don't support gay rights, those who think Jews and Christians are inferior beings, those who don't believe in the separation of Mosque and State, and those who do. The regressive left is defending organizations, people, governments, and religious doctrines that preach the exact opposite of their core beliefs. The worst part is while the regressive left defends Islamism and conservative Muslims, THINKING they're helping Muslims, billions of Muslims suffer and die, especially women and minorities, as a result of their good intentions gone horribly wrong.

It is tragic that this review must be written under these circumstances, with 8 members of Charlie Hebdo's staff being murdered by Islamists, including the author Charb. Compounding the sadness are regressive leftists Reza Aslan, Glenn Greenwald, Max Blumenthal, and others who sympathized with the Islamic terrorists, willingly apply oppressive blasphemy laws to themselves, and try to repress freedom of speech and apply blasphemy laws to others. 8 cartoonists , let me repeat that, cartoonists, were murdered in cold blood and the regressive left had the gall to blame.....the cartoonists.

This book is a call to change the dynamics of everything. Stop taking your rights for granted. Stop allowing the regressive left go unchallenged. Stop living in fear and giving bad ideas a pass. Start remembering the values you stand for. Start remembering the fragility and sacredness of free speech. Start living what you supposedly believe in. This book is great place to start.

Vive la France!

A must-read for all thinking people around the world
By Jennie H.
The late Stphane Charbonnier, known as "Charb" to Charlie Hebdo readers, teaches the world what "Islamophobia" really means (it's not what most people think), and why the possibility of blasphemy is a must when it comes to free speech. No one should be murdered for drawing cartoons (or expressing unpopular opinions), and no one should ask others to be quiet to appease right-wing and left-wing pieties.

Poetrie: The Truth Is, by Marie Louise Elliott

Marie Louise Elliott challenged herself to write a poem a day for a year. The result is a collection of free verse, haiku, and epigrams that illuminates the year’s events, both public and personal, and expresses the poet’s growing awareness that permission to speak is always granted by the truth that refuses to be silent. Exploring contemporary yet timeless, individual yet universal refrains, this collection articulates humanist themes with a humane, uncompromising voice.

The light and breath it requires.
By Amazon Customer
Poetrie: The Truth Is can be appreciated in several ways: as the chronicle of a year’s adversity (a friend dying, the repeated and repeating burdens of war, Sandy Hook), as an assessment of other poets (Neruda, Ferlinghetti, Plath), as a meditation on mortality (“Salt on chocolate cake/Life on the remains/Of life”), as the celebration of the continuity of generations (“The Nugget was born today/On my own birthday/My thoughts?/Happy Birthday to me!”), and as a number of other, equally rewarding, arrangements of the true in opposition to the not-so-true. What I most appreciated on reading and re-reading this collection was the struggle, not simply to say a word for poetry, but to bring the word to the surface of the very material world in which we live—to give the word the light and the breath it requires to allow it to pierce the silence without denigrating or falsifying it. Throughout her book Marie Louise Elliott grapples with both the relation of the material world to her life (for example, in “Carrying My Grandchildren,” “Smile While You Have the Day,” “Early Morning Bike Ride”) and the understanding of what her material existence permits her to say (“Trapped in Words,” “I Was Writing Poetry,” “Can’t Write Today,” “Talk, Talk, Talk”). And then she says a word for expression itself (“The Surface of Things,” “Poems,” “Wandering”).

These poems do what poetry has always done: say something that is right on the tip of our own tongues, but that we only recognize in its having been said. Read this work and enjoy those sharp moments of recognition.

By Amazon Customer
Marie Elliott's first book of poems includes big ideas that locate the heart and mind with laser precision - and the world of things, objects and daily materials of life - so that the reader is pulled into the world that is "true" via these poems. "Poetrie: The Truth Is" gives homage to life and love and a host of Elliott's influences (Ferlinghetti, Neruda, Ginsberg). She takes on an astounding variety of subjects and ideas as well, from violence in gaming to flowers and old leaves; evolution ("the peacock preened itself out of flying") and "the old familiar restlessness". You will read and reread these poems - and remember ripples of meaning and sound in between your readings.

A Special Read
By Amazon Customer
I read "Poetrie: The Truth Is" by Marie Louise Elliott, in one sitting as I could not wait to get to each succeeding page, and every corner of her heart. While I am old school and use to rhyming poetry, I found myself drawn in by Ms. Elliott's approach to the flow of her thoughts and structural line breaks. I was able to get and set my reading rhythm to Ms. Elliott's and found it a very comfortable ride. I highly recommend this small yet powerful work, and suggest it would be an excellent subject for class and seminar reading as well as for personal pleasure reading.

Review

"Math Geek may be the first math book ever to explicitly welcome 'geeks' and 'nerds.' Rosen makes [math] enticing to beginners by writing in a relaxed conversational style, assuming little math knowledge, and relating the math to pop culture and ordinary events. [Readers] will be on their way to becoming the best kind of geek or nerd, the kind that our society needs." --The Los Angeles Review of Books

"Rosen provides a unique and interesting look at the beauty of mathematics without asking readers to delve into intimidating, mathematics-laden formulas." --National Council of Teachers of Mathematics

Not really for the TRUE math geek, but still a good read
By Tiffany F Merritt
I received a complimentary advanced copy, and while I wasn't particularly interested in it, my husband said that he found it to be an enjoyable read. The book is full of 2-3 page vignettes that only take a few minutes to read (which makes this, according to my husband, an excellent book for the bathroom!). He reported the true math geeks would likely already know most of the interesting facts shared in the book, but the more casual nerd would probably like it quite a bit.

We bought a copy of Math Geek, and we weren’t disappointed! It had lots of fun and helpful chapters -- some are perfect to help motivate older students who might need a little extra help with shapes, patterns and other aspects math. The whole family learned a few new things -- some of which you would have no idea have to do with math! We highly recommend this fun read!
