Very helpful book - good for beginners

This book does a very good job of synthesizing a lot of teachings about karma in a way that is easy for a beginner to understand and relate to. It's very easy to read (written in simple language), and the examples it gives are geared towards helping an ordinary person to see firsthand how karma is acting in his or her life, and how to use that understanding to stop suffering.

It utilizes scriptures and teachings from many different spiritual traditions (not just the Eastern ones), as well as plain old-fashioned common sense to help make its points, so I feel this book would be easily accessible to people from any spiritual background.

Although the book is geared towards those who have no prior knowledge of the teachings on karma, I think even those who have some learning in this area would benefit from reading this book, since it provides helpful examples and thought experiments that could be useful in their own expositions on this subject.

One more important note: This book is very practical. Although it does a good job at explaining the theory of Karma, the focus of the book is on helping the reader to change his or her life for the better. So a scholar looking for some grand intellectual commentary may walk away from this book disappointed, but a regular person should find it to be very beneficial.

Simple, Striaghtforward, and Beautiful!

I loved this book! After I read it I bought 15 more just to give out to my friends, family and clients. I feel this book is useful for everybody and anybody beyond all so called "barriers", because it speaks of one universal truth that has undeniably been experienced by all. This book was so easy to read compared to most esoteric books because it was nicely simplified and very straightforward. Finally, someone makes it easier to understand one of the most complex and difficult concepts to grasp , karma. The examples given from Judaism, Christianity, Buddhism, Hinduism, Egyptian, Greek, and Muslim traditions all collaborated well to make clear the same points. Humanity needs this book now! We live in these degenerated times because of our own actions, but we are so asleep that none of us realize the harm that is caused by us. By the loving grace of God, this book gave me the tools to put into effect, the negotiation my karma. Thank you Nikias Annas for this great gift.

This is a must buy!

I couldn't find anything to complain about with this book. It's very relevant. Especially for today. The topic of conserving your sexual energy (ie not having an orgasm) and focusing it in more productive areas is very interesting. In fact, everything in this book is. I highly recommend it.

This volume, based on a number of lectures and supplemented with additional material, provides a pedagogical introduction for graduate students and newcomers entering the field from related areas of nuclear and particle physics.

It pays to read between the lines...

Ok, I can see how someone would initially give this book a bad review, Mr Simmons talks alot about himself and on the surface it appears to just give Westside Barbell members stats. However, their is some solid gold information. I have added over 100lbs to my bench in 3 months just off using the methods I learned from this book. I am a strong big guy but I had no idea about form or technique much less that if I train my back I increase my bench, etc. So is this book worth the twenty bucks? To me most definitely it is. If you want to build a big bench which in turn will build bigger muscles via the pathway of greater strength and increase in weight lifted throughout all your exercises, buy the book study the technique and apply the bench specific training it includes. No longer is my bench day flyes bench dumbells and crossovers. Its warmup, bench, upper back ,traps, shoulders, and forearms. Sometimes a light clicks on and this book helped my big bench light click on. There is also a Westside book of squats and deadlifts. It will do the same for your lifts. The technique and support muscle specific training really pays off. Apply these methods for 2 months then return to your normal routine and you'll be a fan of the book. Periodization pays off. So to wrap this up, yes he talks alot about himself and his crew. Frankly theyre bad asses, but there is alot of really good big bench knowledge in here. Sure no gym has bands mini bands foam press days or board pressing, but the theory behind the supplemental exercises that support a big bench is priceless. To adapt to training is to never adapt to training. Good luck.

Nice manual for the right type of athlete...

The manual is decent in explaining Westside Training. Please keep in mind that Louie and Westside has not produced even 1 IPF World Champion (IPF governs powerlifting worldwide). ZERO. They have however produced several XYZ Federation Champions. Also consider that Westside and Louie has hand selected performance enhanced (steroid using) athletes to train at Westside. Drug free athletes should stay completely away from this system. On the other hand, if you are a synthetic (PEDs using) athlete then this manual will work well for you. Several purchases will need to be made to follow the protocols in the manual. You'll need boards, bands, chains, pads, foam, power rack, specialty bars, and more...

About the Author
Sandro Miller first became interested in photography at the age of 16, when he was exposed to the work of Irving Penn. Miller's career now spans over thirty years, and he has photographed for clients such as American Express, Dove, Coca-Cola, Microsoft, Nike, and Nikon, with whom he has a longstanding working relationship. His editorial work has been featured in The New Yorker, GQ, Esquire, Time, Forbes, Wired, New York Magazine, and ESPN Magazine, among others. He won a Saatchi & Saatchi Best New Director Award for his short film Butterflies featuring John Malkovich, a 2014 Lucie Award for International Photographer of the Year, and has been voted one of the top 200 advertising photographers in the world for the past five years. In addition to photography, Miller devotes himself to charitable organizations such as the American Heart Association, Big Brothers and Big Sisters of Milwaukee, Arts for Life, Dance for Life, and AIDS Chicago. He lives and works in Chicago.

About the Author

Andrew Targowski, Ph.D., is a professor of Business Information Systems at Western Michigan University. He has published many papers and 22 books on information technology, business, philosophy, and civilization in English and Polish. He is a pioneer of business computing and inventor of INFOSTRADA (Poland 1972), which triggered the Information Superhighway wave in the U.S. in the 1990s. He investigates the role of information and wisdom in organizations and civilization. He was Chairman of the Advisory Council of Information Resource Management Society (1996-2003) and is President of the International Society for the Comparative Study of Civilizations (2007-present).

Excellent resource on in a rarely written about realm

Brilliant analysis of wisdom from many different but many times related analytical lenses on the subject of wisdom. I've found that the academic community is devoid of any papers on wisdom as it can be difficult to define. However, Dr. Targowski does an excellent job of bringing the concept to light, defining wisdom in a clear manner while making unique and interesting insights into wisdom. I would highly reccomend this book to anyone interested in cognitive processes.

About the Author
Edmund N. Bacon was born in Philadelphia and studied architecture at Cornell University and at the Cranbrook Academy of Art, under Eliel Saarinen. In 1938, after two years as a city planner in Flint, Michigan, Mr. Bacon became managing director of the Philadelphia Planning Commission from 1949 until his retirement in 1970. Under his leadership Philadeplphia became engaged in a continuous program of restoration and rebuilding that has become famous around the world. In 1971 Mr. Bacon was awarded the American Institute of Planners Distinguished Service Award for his innovations and achievements as Director of the Philadelphia City Planning Commission.

The Quintessential book on Urban Design

This is my favorite book on urban design....how cities work, history of city design, and the key elements that make a city exciting, livable, and functional. A key insight of Mr. Bacon is the potential for the integration of various movement systems (train, car, pedestrian, etc.), and the vitality possible at the intersections and nodes of those systems.

Excellent Book

This book is an excellent introduction to the nature of urban design.

It illustrates, in a concise and simple way, most of the major interventions in urban design beginning with early settlements, and finishing with modern cities. E.G the route to the Acropolis, the extension of the garden of Versailles, the reorientation of Georgian London.

Every point is explained clearly using great plans, sections and photographs.

The book features many references to the conceptual sketches of artist Paul Klee, which Bacon uses as comparisons for urban concepts.

This book had a very positive effect on my understanding of architecture and urban design, and i would recommend it to anyone interested in the field.

Bear in mind that it is not a standard history book. It is more light-hearted but that is why i enjoyed it so much.

Fantastic textbook for architecture students and many architects..

In this classic text on city design Edmund Bacon explains the elements of the new urbanism. I teach architecture and use this text as reference to explain a brief history of urban form and as a model for urban design concepts and drawings because many of its chapters are beautifully illustrated with refined and thoughtful conceptual diagrams that are rich examples for anyone who wants to understand how to design the urban dimension.
