What did the earliest designers do, and how did they learn to do it? What did they call themselves? How did they organize themselves and their work? Drawing on an array of original period documents, the author explores design activities in the printing, typefounding, advertising, and publishing industries. She considers the role of labor unions, advertising agencies, schools of art and design, and professional associations; the writings and ideas of Henry Lewis Johnson and William Addison Dwiggins; and the impact of the values of the Aesthetic Movement and the Arts and Crafts Movement.

ELLEN MAZUR THOMSON is a printmaker, graphic designer, and librarian.

Burton Raffel is Distinguished Professor of English at the University of Southwestern Louisiana and author of many books, including Artists All (Penn State, 1991) and The Art of Translating Poetry (Penn State, 1988). He is the translator of Rabelais's Gargantua and Pantagruel (1990), winner of the 1991 French-American Foundation Translation Prize; Balzac's Pere Goriot (1994), and a forthcoming new version of Cervantes's Don Quijote.

John Kekes includes these examples not out of sensationalism, but rather to underline the need to hold vividly in our minds just what evil is. The second part shows why, in Kekes's view, explanations of evil inspired by Christianity and the Enlightenment fail to account for these cases and then provides an original explanation of evil in general and of these instances of it in particular.

To Be or Not To Be Evil!

In art as in literature, the interpretation of the human is best left to the masters and Kekes is one of the masters in his interpretation of the human in life. Evil, in particular, is a very difficult subject to clarify as by its very nature it is mostly masked and insidious in its consequences. But, evil does exist, and we ought to know why and how it is manifested. Evil is an art form all its own. From evil creeping into our politics, to its manifestations in business, let alone on the streets and into our homes. In addition, beware of the evil inclinations of the seven deadly sins. "The Roots of Evil" is a fine introduction to the subject because it instructs us in what it means to be good, as well. Kekes writes, ""For insofar as ordinary morality deviates from the higher, it deviates from the good, and that must be an error ..." While individual deviations may be willful or ignorant, "Morality at the very least must protect the minimum conditions of human well being". So if you care about morality you must care about ordinary decency and those, who with malice, who tend to defy it.

Interesting discussion

This book provides a cogent analysis of evil and along the way presents many interesting topics linked to moral values, responsibility and ethics. One important point is the recognition that evil is not mysterious but is part of the ambivalence, contradictions and propensities of human nature. Hence, contrary to the Enlightenment naive optimism, it is implausible (in view of human history) that evil will ever be completely
eradicated from human society. What one can expect is to minimize it and protect society from its terrible effects.

To do that one needs to understand the mechanism (internal and external) and causes that lead to evil actions. First step is to recognize there are different types of evil and the author tries to extract some pattern from unequivocal instances of evil, namely the Albigensian crusaders, Robespierre's reign of terror, Stangl's command of Treblinka, Argentinian "dirty-war" torturers, Charles Manson murders and a psychopath's career.

Overall it provides a rational, secular and objective discussion. The weak point is the proposed solutions to deal with evil. One proposal is to help people develop a "moral imagination", sources of which could be found in reading the classics. This sounds like the usual naive Enlightenment optimism once again. After all classical education didn't prevent the horrible instances of evil in the recent past; moreover, how on earth one is supposed to instill an interest in the classics nowadays, in our age of fast and superficial information, in which new media formats compete, through direct emotional appeals, to an increasingly impatient audience? Maybe the author will try to tackle these issues in his other books.

Joseph Bosco is a journalist who has written other books on true crime. He tells the story as he sees it. The `Acknowledgments' thanks the prosecution team, the defense team, the Sheriff's Office, the LAPD, the media reporters, and many, many others. This very readable book lacks an index and is not a good reference. But it is a unique eyewitness account of the trial. Chapter 21 explains "reasonable doubt". The State's case must "exclude all reasonable hypothesis of innocence". Any scenario supported by evidence that could exculpate the defendant creates reasonable doubt that requires a verdict of not guilty. Peter Bozanich said the media was biased against Simpson (p.258). They never criticized the conduct of the prosecution team and a poorly presented case (p.259). The jury followed the evidence and the law. What is the psychological problem of those who hate O. J. Simpson but pass over Timothy McVeigh (p.261)?

The `Introduction' says the book will present "snapshots" of the crime, the trial, and the events. It will probably be different to what you have read. Bosco was amazed by the taped and edited segments of the trial on television because it was different from what he saw in the courtroom (p.xv). This book will not cover broad aspects of the trial but with the pivotal "facts" of the case. In effect, it is why they voted "not guilty" (pp.xvi-xvii). Bosco's past knowledge of a "blood case" murder made him more knowledgeable; he was a friend of Dr. Henry Lee, the "pre-eminent forensic scientist". Bosco says Detective Vannatter did not call the designated Deputy District Attorney but Marcia Clark (p.xix). No explanation given.

Chapter 1 asks if the case against OJ was "almost too perfect" because it could be a frame-up (p.1)? Chapter 2 tells why the grand jury was dismissed - it would not indict on murder (pp.8-9). Chapter 4 comments on the DA's arrogance. Office politics eliminated the best prosecutors (p.22). The LAPD's rating is on page 23. [Did you see that on TV?] The public did not see all that happened (p.40). Reporters were afraid (p.42). Chapter 7 notes the blunders of the prosecution (p.57). The jurors did not believe in a lone killer (p.63). What happened in the court was not on TV (p.68). Chapter 8 lists the mysteries about the murders. Why was the security gate left open (p.73)? The Italian shoes were traced, "none to OJ" (p.75). What about the bloody fingerprints on those glasses (p.76)? The Medical Examiner's autopsies created a problem for the Prosecution (Chapter 10). There are questions about the blood spatter (pp.104-106).

The lack of extensive physical damage on OJ is an argument for his innocence (Chapter 11). Allen Park didn't see the Bronco, or Kato's car either (p.151). Chapter 12 has his comments on Nicole's family. Chapter 13 discusses the status of the blood evidence. The gloves didn't fit (p.167). Bosco blames Marcia Clark for losing the case (Chapter 16). What is the significance of Fuhrman's pointing to the glove (p.219)? There is a theory about planting the glove (p.224). There is more about Fuhrman's importance on page 228. Was there a hidden secret for the prosecution team (p.238)? Was the trial an exercise in Public Relations (p.244)?

The Trial of O.J. Simpson was the most publicized event since the Washington hearings on Watergate and Nixon's impeachment. Why did the corporate media push it so much? What the media didn't tell you about the O.J. "case"

Only two of the O.J. trial books are really essential reads: Lawrence Schiller's, and this one. Anyone who professes to be "outraged" by the verdict MUST READ THIS. You will still be outraged when you finish ... at all the TV and print media who downplayed much of the evidence that was plainly presented in the courtroom and then had the nerve to blast the jury for returning the only verdict a reasonable person could. Unlike Dominick Dunne, Bosco covered the trial like a real journalist and not a dilettante. The result is many fascinating and unsettling nuggets and factoids. Such as: the truly mercenary nature of the Brown family (Lou Brown had the audacity to lie about not getting child support while O.J. was in jail); the clear evidence that more than one person was directly involved and the unlikeliness that any of the killers were Heisman trophy winners and just how badly the media let themselves be manipulated (I find it unsettling that some of the "respectable" press sold stories to tabloids on the side). For his efforts, Bosco's book goes unreviewed while Dunne writes a forgettable, racist memoir in which he can't even use his own name and gets lionized. There ain't no justice in the world.

My first introduction to this book was in a biophysics course at University of Buffalo in 1991. Von Recum's text was assigned reading and in my opinion remains a must read for anyone working in the world of biomaterials science.
This book is an indepth and informative review of practically every aspect of biologically implantable materials. It covers a spectrum of topics beginning with basic scientific principles of material science and biocompatibility, through many aspects of experimental design, and on to issues regarding FDA regulations and approval for biomaterials research.
Von Recum has edited a book that is useful and extremely informative to students, clinicians, researchers, and research administrators alike. I highly recommend this book as a valuable reference for just about anyone in the biomedical and scientific community.

Kids love it

My kids absolutely love this book. They pull it out daily and practice saying microscopic, teeny-weeny or the merried of other adjectives used in both English and Romanian...... somehow, they find the words amusing. It's not exactly what I expected since the text is limited and the story is very short, but the illustrations are colorful and the overall theme is cute.

Complete Sabbath History in Detail

Martin Popoff knows his hard rock and heavy metal and this book is excellent. He goes into detail about every lp ever released and goes into depth about the songwriting at the time the songs were written. Tony Iommi's riffs are legendary and so are the details about the history of Black Sabbath in this book. This is a must read for any Black Sabbath or hard rock fan, it has everything, from Ozzy to Tony Martin from Dio to The late Ray Gillian to the legendary Deep Purple frontman Ian Gillian.
This book is the best Black Sabbath book out there bar none and Martin Popoff did a wonderful job. Buy this book.

Probably the best Sabbath book available, very complete.

I have looked at some of the other Sabbath Books, and this one caught my eye. I can say it is probably the most thourough history of sabbath in one book. I was expecting a few more photos, but the history still is killer. It has all of the good stuff, from ozzy leaving, to dio's first comeback and second leaving, and ozzy's return. The history does seem complete from what I gather, including all of the details in transition with the band's line-up over the later years. The picture are nice as well, although I was thinking there would be a few more, it's still good. A must have book for Sabbath fans. Check this one out.

One of the best books on Black Sabbath

The latest book from Martin Popoff covers every era of Black Sabbath from Ozzy to Tony Martin. There are plenty of entertaining stories and each album is explored. This is definitely the highest quality book that Martin has put out. The quality of the paper is very good and there are plenty of excellent pictures of current and former band members as well as pictures of Sabbath memorabilia. If you are a fan of one or all of the eras of Black Sabbath you should get this book!
